According to sources at the Pakistani Embassy in Morocco, the first reports on January 15 suggested that 44 Pakistanis died in the boat accident. However, local authorities have only recovered 13 bodies on the scene.

The Pakistani Embassy in Morocco has worked with local officials to facilitate the identification process. The data and photographs of the fingerprints were shared with Nadra, which checked the identity of the victims. Once the confirmation is completed, the official lists were compiled and released.

A tragic boat accident off Morocco, which occurred after leaving Mauritania on January 2, cost the lives of at least 50 people. The unhappy ship carried 86 migrants, the Moroccan authorities reporting that 66 of the passengers were Pakistani nationals. After the incident, 36 people were saved by the Moroccan authorities.

In the wake of the tragedy, strong reactions have emerged from the Pakistani government, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordering the authorities to take severe measures against human traffickers and civil servants involved in the facilitation of illegal migrations. This follows the growing concern concerning the growing number of capsuration incidents of boats involving Pakistani migrants.

Earlier this month, the former FIA Managing Director Ahmed Ishaca, Jehangir has removed 35 officials for their involvement in the facilitation of human smuggling operations and not to exercise their functions effectively.

Meanwhile, eight survivors of the boat accident, aged 21 to 41, arrived at Islamabad airport earlier during the day on the flight of Qatar Airways QR614. They are currently questioned by Pakistani officials. The survivors – Muhammad Afzal, Muhammad Adeel, Irfan Ahmed, Arsalan Shamil, Ghulam Mustafa, Badram Muhiuddin, Mujahid Ali and Tasbeeh Ahmed Shamil – returned to Pakistan after the tragedy.

The survivors come from various districts, including two from Sheikhupura, two from Siackot, two from Mandi Bahauddin, and one from Gujarat and Jhelum. Seven other Pakistani people who survived the boat incident returned to Pakistan last night, with three from Gujarat and one from Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot.
