The best streaming services are still making sure we have plenty to watch as we count down the days until the 2025 holiday season.
Indeed, it was another bumper week of new movies and shows. In fact, competition was once again so fierce that the final season of the Star Wars television series aimed at children Adventures of the Young Jedi and Amazon’s latest Spanish young adult romance film Tell me softly I didn’t even make the list. That tells you everything you need to know about the strength of this weekend’s line-up.
But I digress. Let’s not waste any more time diving into what’s worth streaming before Monday rolls around again. – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter
Wake Up, Dead Man: A Mystery at Knives Out (Netflix)
Look on it
What says “it’s almost Christmas” like the family arguing over a detective movie? I guarantee you won’t be able to guess the culprit At Knives Out 3alias Wake Up Dead Man: A knife-edge mystery.
If you are a traditionalist when it comes to your criminal adventures, At Knives Out 3 is the trilogy story made for you. Even if it doesn’t, it’s undoubtedly Benoit Blanc’s (Daniel Craig) most successful outing.
There are darker forces at play this time around – without giving too much away, this is an Easter Sunday resurrection gone wrong. New pastor Jud (Josh O’Connor) is our real standout character, while nosy church secretary Martha (Glenn Close) delivers full pantomime levels of internal breakdown. Check out my At Knives Out 3 Review to learn more about why this is the best entry in the series yet.
Many secrets are closely guarded… but can you guess them before streaming them on Netflix? – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment journalist
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 (Disney+)
Look on it
Our favorite demigod is back Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. After a very successful first broadcast and a solid Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, we now move on to the plot of Rick Riordan’s second book, aka “The Sea of Monsters.”
The Disney+ series is arguably the best adaptation we’ve ever had, and it was a joy to revisit a book series I enjoyed as a teenager years ago. This season you can expect more monsters, even more impressive stunts and exciting new features.
The first two episodes are currently airing and it’s worth watching them back to back. This has the potential to be better than Season 1 and I’m already invested. – Lucy Buglas, senior entertainment editor
F1: The Movie (Apple TV)
Look on it
The last big Apple TV release of the year, F1: The movie has finally zoomed in on the tech giant’s streaming platform. And, after receiving critical and commercial acclaim upon its initial theatrical release, it has taken the top spot on my list of films to watch this weekend.
The company Apple and Warner Bros. stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, also a Formula 1 champion who comes out of retirement to try to finally win the world championship. He is ending his 30-year exile to also help his former teammate’s struggling side, which counts Damson Idris enthusiast Joshua Pearce among its talents.
A thrilling sports drama that brings you as close to the action as possible, the latest feature film from Top Gun: Maverick Director Joe Kozinski’s is not only one of the best Apple TV movies of all time, but also one of the biggest movies of 2025. Run to your couch and stream it ASAP. – TP
Merv (Prime Video)
Look on it
It’s not Christmas unless you’ve watched at least one heartwarming romantic comedy, so why not try your luck with this new Prime Video movie starring Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox?
Merv is guaranteed to touch your heart, because at the center of this feel-good story is a scruffy rescue terrier named Gus who just wants his owners to reunite so life can return to normal. In an effort to cheer Gus up, his estranged owners take him on a getaway to Florida, but could the trip also end up mending their own broken hearts?
Dog movies have a habit of tearing our hearts out, but this is one of the most wholesome new Prime Video movies, making it ideal for anyone who wants to encourage that dog to wag his tail again. – Amelia Schwanke, Entertainment Editor
Taylor Swift | The tour of eras | The End of an Era (Disney+)
Look on it
Are you ready for this? You will be delighted by Taylor Swift’s new docuseries The end of an era so much so that you’ll want to binge on them forever and ever (sorry, I’ll stop now).
Not only are we getting a whole new cut of the Tour of the eras film that finally includes “The Department of Tortured Poets,” but the six-part documentary series will finally let us understand exactly how it all happened.
Think about how Taylor came up with the idea to hide in a mop cart to get her on stage, that surprise Travis Kelce performance on Wembley Night 3, and how the woman continues to come up with so many amazing Easter eggs. That’s really what the life of a showgirl is (sorry, I couldn’t resist). – Joint venture
Roofer (Paramount+)
Look on it
A well-behaved convicted thief who escapes from prison and hides out in a Toys ‘R’ Us store for six months, only to fall in love with one of the clerks, is not a story you come across every day.
It’s easy to see why director Derek Cianfrance was drawn to the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, which ultimately inspired him to direct Roofer. The new Paramount+ film has all the makings of a thrilling crime drama with an intimate romance at its heart, delivering the in-depth character study the filmmaker is known for.
As we noted in our Roofer review, Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst vividly bring the story to life, their unwavering gazes communicating volumes without a single word. It’s a gripping watch that will likely surprise anyone unfamiliar with the true story. – AS
Wizkid: Long Live Lagos (HBO Max)
Described as “an intimate and thrilling documentary,” this HBO Max film follows Nigerian singer Wizkid’s journey to global stardom. Over its 90-minute runtime, you can expect to see personal scenes, live performances, and an exploration of its impact on cultural perceptions.
The film was directed by Karam Gill, who has made other documentaries focusing on musicians like Marshmello and Lil Baby. Gill has also directed some of Marshmello’s music videos over the years.
If you’re a fan of Wizkid or fancy checking out some new music this weekend, why not dive into Wizkid: Long live Lagos? You might learn a thing or two along the way. -KG
