The weekend is officially here, and that means it’s time for you to get up and enjoy one or more of the new movies and TV shows that have debuted on the world’s best streaming services.
There are also plenty of choices. From hot new TV series and ones that are so bad they’re good, to the streaming debut of some of last year’s box office bombs, you can while away hours with the seven biggest new properties we’ve highlighted below. Appreciate! – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter
Beauty (Hulu/Disney+)
Look on it
After the 0% Rotten Tomatoes flop that took place Everything is fairRyan Murphy is back to give us another chance with beauty – and I mean that literally. Two FBI agents (played by Evan Peters and Rebecca Hall) travel across Europe to discover the mysterious deaths of a group of models.
None of them seem to know each other, but all exhibit the same symptoms: a virus burning alive from the inside and spontaneously exploding upon death. Oh, did I mention that this virus is sexually transmitted?
It’s as hilarious as it sounds and it’s hot on the heels of the first two episodes released this week (read my review of The Beauty for more on what to expect). I think it is important to keep in mind the wise words of RuPaul’s Drag Race star Bianca Del Rio: “Beauty fades, stupidity is forever.” – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment journalist
Fly (Prime Video)
Look on it
What would you do if you were working a mundane finance job with an average salary in the city’s banking district, only to discover that upon arriving at the office you were taken hostage by a terrifying team of armed strangers? Unfortunately for Zara (Sophie Turner), it’s exactly her Monday morning in Prime Video’s new drama, Fly.
The first episode of the Amazon TV Original is a masterclass in storytelling, as Zara holds some dirty secrets of her own. Country And Service exercise fans will also rejoice in the appearance of Anna Maxwell Martin, who plays an MI5 agent in exactly the same way I imagine Julia would handle a national crisis.
Fly is easily one of the strongest thrillers we’ve been treated to this month – read my Fly review to find out why.. – Joint venture
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (Hulu/Disney+)
Look on it
Baby, we were born to ruuuuun… to Hulu and Disney+ this weekend for the streaming debut of this Bruce Springsteen biopic.
The bearJeremy Allen White’s Jeremy Allen White stars as the legendary musician known as “The Boss,” with the film chronicling Springsteen’s personal and professional life as he works on the seminal 1982 album “Nebraska.” Armed with strong performances from White and Jeremy Strong, this is a film that fans of the American rocker will thoroughly enjoy. Everyone else? Based on its mixed reception by critics and general audiences, probably not so much. – TP
Queer Eye season 10 (Netflix)
Look on it
Our Fabulous Five are returning to Netflix for the final time – and, if I’m being completely honest, strange eye Season 10 may be worth watching for the off-screen drama. Indeed, if you’ve been following the press tour recently, you’ll notice that Karamo pulled out of all interviews at the last minute, fueling rumors of alleged behind-the-scenes disagreements.
But what do the episodes themselves have in store for us? The gang preys on the residents of Washington, D.C. over its final five episodes, “pampering them and giving them the tools to continue growing even after the Fab Five return beyond the Beltway,” as Netflix puts it. The tissues are ready, I think. – Joint venture
The Smashing Machine (HBO Max)
Look on it
Dwayne Johnson may be known for playing a scorpion king and a Hawaiian demigod, but it’s his transformative role as mixed martial arts champion and UFC champion Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie’s film. The smashing machine it turned heads in what ended up being a box office bomb for the star.
The former wrestler turned actor received his first-ever Golden Globe nomination for his unrecognizable performance in the A24 biopic. Although neither he nor his co-star Emily Blunt won a trophy, this nod alone marks a major change in Johnson’s career.
It’s less blockbuster action and more of a more hard-hitting emotional drama, playing on the contrast between Kerr’s gentle off-screen demeanor and the brutality of the fight sequences, making it an ideal watch on HBO Max. – Amelia Schwanke, Entertainment Editor
Drops of God season 2 (Apple TV)
Look on it
You’re going to want to forget about the dry people of January, because Apple TV’s hit wine drama is back, with even more mystery vintages and family drama than its first season.
Drops of God Season 2 only kicked off with one episode, but the Apple TV Original is wasting no time launching an all-new quest to discover where the world’s greatest wine is made. The challenge brings together the estranged daughter of famed wine critic and former protégé Alexandre Léger for one final test of the family legacy.
The result is a heady blend of psychological and generational drama, with hints of armchair travel and intrigue, best enjoyed with an Apple TV subscription. – AS
Skyscrapers Live (Netflix)
Look on it
Tonight (January 23) at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET, famous climber Alex Honnold takes over Netflix with a live event that will see him attempt to scale the exterior of what was once the world’s tallest building, aka Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
In true Honnold fashion, he will tackle the 1,667-foot climb without ropes. As if the stakes weren’t high enough, the entire feat will be broadcast live around the world for two hours. Best known for climbing El Capitan in the documentary Free singleplayerHonnold is one of the most accomplished free climbers in the world, but that won’t stop my palms from sweating. – AS
