We had a Really It’s hard to decide what to include in this week’s streaming recommendations article. Indeed, so many new and returning movies and TV shows have arrived on the world’s top streaming services in recent days that we could have written four articles like this to cover them all.
Unfortunately for the twenty or so missed films and series, we can only compile one. We think, however, that the seven we’ve chosen are the cream of the crop, so we’re confident you’ll find one of the options below appealing. Happy broadcasting! – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter
Weirdest Friday (Disney+)
Look on it
Dust off your Walkman and fire up that Motorola Razr V3, millennials, because this year’s big nostalgic Y2K movie is finally streaming on Disney+. After a good box office, Weirdest Friday was considered a success by fans and critics alike, even surpassing the original.
So what did Disney get right? Reuniting Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as the iconic mother-daughter duo in this sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy is the main reason why this is one of the most notable new Disney+ films. Beyond that, the film offers a big dose of cheesy humor and plenty of callbacks for longtime fans.
It’s not perfect but, if you’re looking for a lightweight watch, Weirdest Friday hits the mark. Be sure to check out our Weirdest Friday watch again once you’ve seen it! – Amelia Schwanke, Entertainment Editor
In Your Dreams (Netflix)
Look on it
Netflix has a pretty solid track record when it comes to animated family films. The sea beast, Klaus, Ultraman: on the riseAnd Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro are just four big new Netflix films that have received critical and commercial acclaim over the past two years. Oh, and then there was this little known movie about a kpop group that hunts demons. What was it called again…
Just kidding, kidding. It is practically impossible that In your dreamsthe latest animated feature film from Netflix, will be close to the cultural phenomenon known as Demon Hunters Kpop. Still, the story of siblings who travel to the dream world to find The Sandman, with the goal of allowing him to grant their wish to save their parents’ marriage, feels like a hoot.
Expect the usual family themes to be explored through the prism of another beautiful, action-packed, laugh-out-loud film. – TP
Malice (Prime Video)
Look on it
The X Files” David Duchovny teams up with Fresh meatis Jack Whitehall in this new Prime Video thriller series. This isn’t a combo I expected, but I think it’s genius.
Malice follows Duchovny’s wealthy character, Jamie, who hires a male nanny, Adam from Whitehall, but all is not as it seems as it soon becomes apparent that Adam’s intentions might not be pure.
Set in picturesque locations like Greece and London, Jamie follows Adam and his family, plotting something. If you’re craving a bingeable, twisty Amazon TV Original, this one’s here for you this weekend. – Lucy Buglas, senior entertainment editor
Landman season 2 (Paramount+)
Look on it
Grab your cowboy hats, guys, because Billy Bob Thornton is back on stage. Landman joined Taylor Sheridan’s 2024-verse on Paramount+, starring Tommy Norris (Thornton) a key player in the West Texas oil trade. He strives to secure the future of his company during a business boom, but basically everyone he comes into contact with is his natural enemy.
Season 2 increases the pressure on Norris, with his girlfriend Cami Miller (Demi Moore) and her family pushing him to the breaking point. Mooreheads will be happy to know that she’ll be playing a much bigger role this time around, and that she’ll be returning to us after her Oscar nomination for The bottom.
If there’s one thing Sheridan doesn’t skimp on, it’s messy drama. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Landman is the messiest of the bunch and, if Cami just got upset, I’d pre-order your popcorn now. – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment journalist
Eddington (HBO Max)
Look on it
Ari Aster is back with a new collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix, following his crazy but brilliant film Beau is scared. This time, Phoenix leads a neo-western thriller, set in New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eddington follows the conflict between Phoenix Sheriff Joe Cross and Pedro Pascal Mayor Ted Garcia, whose election feud causes political and social unrest. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 68%, Eddington is not Aster’s highest rated film (that one is still Hereditary) but if you’re a fan of his work in general, you should enjoy this one. – kg
Palm Royale season 2 (Apple TV)
Look on it
Ready to return to the high society of 1960s Palm Beach, Florida? Great, because Apple TV’s mystery series Royal Palm returned with a more scandalous plot and over-the-top drama than many long-running soap operas.
Described by its stars when meeting Hitchcock Delightedit stars Kristen Wiig as socialite Maxine Delacourt, determined to secure a place in America’s most exclusive club. Picking up directly after the shocking shock of Season 1, Season 2 finds Maxine excluded following that very public breakdown at the Beach Ball.
While the Apple TV Original hasn’t been a breeze, it has built a dedicated audience that will surely be excited about this new season – it’s more of the same, but manages to up the stakes in new and exciting ways. Pay attention to the opening scene, which pays homage to ’60s Hollywood icons in a way that will have you cheering for the return of Ricky Martin. – AS
The Seduction (HBO Max)
Look on it
I didn’t think I needed a prequel series for Dangerous connections entirely in French, but that of HBO Max Seduction quickly proved me wrong (read my Seduction review to find out why).
In cinematic terms, we witness the rise of a young Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil (originally played by Glenn Close, now played by Anamaria Vartolomei). Along with their enemy Rosemonde (Diane Kruger), the two men embark on their climb to the top of the promiscuous French elite.
There are as many sexual and explicit scandals as you can imagine, but it’s actually the least interesting part of the six-episode series. Instead, it’s the quiet, calculated drama that really sings. It’s never an easy sell to two women operating in a man’s world, but the man are just mere servants overall. It’s like a long game of chess, except the pieces don’t wear clothes. – Joint venture
