Early March is a big weekend for shows rather than movies. We’ve got four brand-new shows worth watching debuting on the best streaming services, ranging from cop shenanigans to scandalous dramas.
There are two return results in the form Ted season 2 and the final season of Outlander, and even this week’s new movie is TV-related, like Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is coming to Netflix. Here’s why we’re looking forward to these shows, plus the trailers if you want to see a little more.
Vladimir (Netflix)
Look on it
Blessed are all those who are die-hard fans of Rachel Weisz, like Vladimir offers the same level of outrageous merchandise as its 2023 TV adaptation of Dead ringtones. She plays a woman simply known as The Protagonist, a professor at a university with her husband John (John Slattery), who was suspended after numerous allegations of sexual assault against him came to light.
At the same time, new professor Vladimir (Leo Woodall) arrives on campus – and although they are both married, Weisz becomes infatuated with him, fantasizing about the idea of Vladimir whenever she can.
The new Netflix series isn’t just eight hot episodes, it’s also ridiculously messed up. Take off the rose-tinted glasses and we are left with a complicated soup of pure mess, forcing us to engage critically in ways we normally fear. In short, a real breath of fresh air. — Jasmine Valentine, entertainment journalist
Young Sherlock (Prime Video)
Look on it
Who knew that Sherlock Holmes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) and James Moriarty (Dónal Finn) were essentially the Smothers Brothers of the detective game in their youth? Well, at least they’re in the imaginations of Matthew Parkhill and Guy Ritchie from the famous detective’s youth in Young Sherlock.
Filled with thrilling action and endless mysteries at a faster-than-light pace, it’s shows like this that reignite your enthusiasm for what television can accomplish, for the awesome direction entertainment and design can collectively take.
Young Sherlock is fresh, energetic and full of so much dynamism that it fizzes with electricity. Give Richie all the money he wants in the future, I say. Who needs Baker Street anyway? – Joint venture
Rooster (HBO Max)
Look on it
Comedy Icon Steve Carell Leads HBO Max Cast Rooster. He stars alongside Charly Clive, and they play a father-daughter duo who have a complicated relationship.
Carell’s character, Greg Russo, is a best-selling author with a popular character named Rooster. He’s nothing like his much-loved book character and wishes he could be, and he’s forced to confront a lot as he’s brought in to speak at the liberal arts college where his daughter, Kate, works. Here he gets more than he bargained for when he finds her in the middle of a personal crisis that he must help resolve, striking a deal with her department head to help her keep her job (between this and VladimirIt’s happening in academia right now…).
The series runs for 10 episodes, with the pilot available on March 8. If you like it, you can look forward to weekly releases and add something new to your viewing schedule. – Lucy Buglas, senior entertainment editor
RJ Decker (Hulu)
Look on it
In a sunny Florida context, RJ Decker follows an ex-con turned private detective who is described as a “private detective, but a public mess.” I’m already looking forward to seeing how Scott Speedman takes on such an intriguing role in this new Hulu crime series.
Over the course of nine episodes, RJ Decker tackles strange cases alongside his ex-journalist, his police wife and a woman from his past with unclear intentions. That’s a lot of people, and I’m sure there will be plenty of drama and headbutting throughout the series.
If you miss High potential Like me, this series might be the perfect way to get your original take on crime-solving, and it’s an exciting new addition to Hulu’s library. – kg
Ted S2 (Peacock)
Look on it
As I told my new best friend Alanna Ubach in an interview earlier this week, the world never needed the explicit silliness of Ted season 2 than now. John (Max Burkholder) enters high school, accompanied by Ted (Seth MacFarlane) for a wild and crude adventure.
But it’s not just these two who are spiraling out of control. Susan (Ubach) is arrested and the whole family participates in a noisy game of Dungeons & Dragons in an attempt to obtain drugs. Precious memories to be made, I’m sure.
Ted is still the star of the show, and if MacFarlane is reading this, I need more episodes pumped into my veins, stat. — Joint venture
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (Netflix)
You are cordially invited to the scandal of the season, as Downton Abbey opens its doors for the final time. The Crawleys are forced to embrace change with the next generation, as they are now responsible for leading the estate and its legacy into the future.
This is easier said than done, of course, especially when Mary finds herself embroiled in a public scandal and the family additionally faces financial difficulties. The threat of social disgrace suddenly becomes very real and they must fight to protect their reputation.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was truly grandiose, and critics praised the film for being a satisfying conclusion to the long-running drama. It’s now on Netflix, so you can revisit the beloved domain whenever you want. – kg
Outlander season 8 (final season – Starz)
Look on it
And there you have it, the end is near. After 12 years of following the time-traveling love story of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), Stranger season 8 is its final chapter. If early reviews tempt us to turn back the clock, we’re about to return to the pure romantic magic of Season 1.
What will be particularly interesting is how the prequel spinoff series Outlander: Blood of My Blood could be integrated into the main storyline, following Claire and Jamie’s parents. We know that a second season was filmed around the same time, so it’s surely not a stretch to assume that some intriguing cameos could be in play. Or maybe I’m just a dreamer… make of that what you will. — Joint venture
