- Always wild was canceled after 10 years of development this summer
The first screenshots of Rare’s canceled action-adventure game Always wild have appeared online, giving us a glimpse of how the game progressed before it was abandoned by Xbox.
The workshop behind Sea of Thieves revealed Always wild in 2019, but development on the game began in 2014. Planned to be a third-person fantasy adventure game, the project was in development for almost 10 years before being canceled by Xbox in June amid a series of layoffs and other game cancellations.
Now, a year after the project was abandoned, the first screenshots of the game provide an idea of what the game might have looked like if Rare had been able to complete development.
In these images we can see a silver-haired character, likely the same character featured in the few trailers for the game. They can be seen standing in a forest environment, exploring what appears to be ruins, with an art style not so different from that of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Screenshots of the #Everwild cancellation were posted by an artist who is in #Rare for the project. According to what has been informed on MP1ST, these images will be of a version of the game close to its cancellation in June of this year. pic.twitter.com/FN9ci0VOMnOctober 12, 2025
There are also inventory screenshots, showing a “Favorites” panel and a list of items, including “Figments”, which look like Breath of the Wild’s Korok, “tools”, “mosaics”, “seeds” and “plants”.
The Figments tab suggests a collection feature that would have required the player to collect the small creatures for an unknown purpose, and the tiles could suggest the same.
With the mention of tools, seeds and plants, it is possible that Everwild could have contained elements of a life simulation or survival game, which has been speculated in 2023.
A settings menu also displays a range of graphics settings, with several presets to choose from, as well as a “performance and visual option”.
When Always wild was canceled, Xbox also announced that The Initiative and the studio’s work on Perfect dark would be stopped, as well as an unexpected game of THE Ancient scrolls Online developer ZeniMax.
At the time, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, said in an email to Xbox staff that the job cuts “reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to enable our teams to better succeed in a changing industry landscape.”
Not a month later, Xbox also canceled the Avalanche Studios bootleg.
