- Samsung Introduces 8K RGB Micro-LED LCD TV at CES 2025
- It follows Hisense’s mini-LED RGB LCD TV, the 116UX.
- Samsung hopes to release it in 2025 as a flagship model
Samsung revealed an 8K LCD TV using RGB micro-LED backlighting at CES 2025. The TV doesn’t have an official name or model number, but Samsung hopes to release it in 2025.
Just days after Hisense unveiled a TV using mini-RGB LED backlighting, the 116-inch Hisense UX, which it says will significantly improve brightness and color accuracy over standard mini-LED TVs, Samsung has introduced an 8K set with even more advanced RGB micro-LED backlighting.
As FlatpanelsHD reports, the prototype was presented a day before CES at the “Samsung First Look” event. The model on display was a 98-inch 8K set, although Samsung says it could also be available in smaller sizes and is eyeing a 2025 release date, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.
The 8K RGB Micro-LED TV, if released in 2025, will serve as Samsung’s flagship 8K TV, above the already announced Samsung QN990F (pictured above) and Samsung QN900F, revealed earlier at CES in the frame of Samsung’s 2025 mini-TV. LED range.
Samsung claims that opting for micro-LEDs rather than mini-LEDs in the RGB backlighting will allow for “three times more LEDs”, meaning more vibrant colors and improved brightness. The even smaller micro-LED backlight will most likely allow for more dimming zones than the mini-LED backlight.
The set is currently a “prototype” as there is no name, model number, price or full list of specifications available, but it will likely be in the high-end end of the market.
Micro-LED at a lower cost?
Although this 8K RGB micro-LED TV is likely to have a very high price tag, it offers an interesting opportunity: access to micro-LED technology at a lower cost. While the price of the TV is still likely to be in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, it will be a significant drop compared to a full-fledged micro-LED TV.
Samsung has launched a 98-inch 8K model in 2023 (delayed to 2024), the Samsung QN990C, which costs $40,000 / £34,999. So the 98-inch RBG micro-LED presented will be more expensive than that and will remain a premium product.
However, this is still lower than the exorbitant prices we see for purely micro-LED TVs, albeit with larger screen sizes. Samsung’s 2022 110-inch micro-LED costs $149,999. LG’s 118-inch MAGNIT micro-LED, priced at $237,000, is something most people will never be able to afford. Still, micro-LEDs were considered the future of TVs, beating out even the best OLED TVs. But these prices simply aren’t feasible for 99% of people.
This new Samsung model won’t have all the benefits of a purely micro-LED TV, like Hisense’s impressive 163-inch micro-LED TV unveiled at CES, but the use of micro-LEDs in the backlight of the TV would still be an upgrade over mini-LED backlights, as micro-LEDs will achieve better black levels, better contrast, higher brightness, and more vibrant colors. Is the technology still likely to be expensive? Yes, but you’d expect it to be significantly lower than the going rate for a MicroLED TV.
We are impatiently awaiting more details on this micro-LED RGB from Samsung, with a very close eye on the price. Could this finally be the start of the integration of micro-LEDs into lower-cost televisions? Fingers crossed!
