- The Turbo model crushes the 0-60 mph sprint in 2.5 seconds
- Prices will start at £83,200 or $109,000 in the US
- The interior now contains more screen real estate than ever
Porsche has finally revealed everything about its upcoming electrified Cayenne model, which will be offered in electric Cayenne and spicier electric Cayenne Turbo variants.
The latter will be crowned Porsche’s most powerful production model to date, thanks to its frankly terrifying 850 kW (1,156 hp) and up to 1,500 Nm of torque when Launch Control is activated.
Direct oil cooling of the rear axle engine allows for continued high outputs, with many technologies borrowed from motorsport to ensure it can regularly perform its face-melting party laps.
A top speed of 260km/h and a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 2.5 seconds are possible in the German brand’s large SUV, while adaptive air suspension and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus mean it’s just as happy lapping the race tracks as it is tackling the school run.
But the breadth of its capabilities doesn’t stop there, as the Cayenne Electric and Cayenne Turbo Electric both feature all-wheel drive with various driving modes and an easy-to-adjust suspension that will also allow it to happily traverse some pretty rough terrain.
Porsche also claims it is one of the most technologically advanced electric vehicles developed to date, with a new 113 kWh high-voltage battery offering an official range of 398 miles on a single charge.
Add in 800V architecture similar to that found on the Macan Electric and Taycan, and the Cayenne can happily charge at 390kW, with the German brand suggesting this can extend up to 400kW in good charging conditions.
In the real world, this translates to a 10-80% charge in about 16 minutes from the fastest DC charging outlets, or an extra 200 miles in just 10 minutes of charging time.
The ‘entry-level’ model isn’t really a slouch, offering 300 kW (408 hp) in normal operation and 325 kW (442 hp) and 835 Nm of torque when using Launch Control. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a supercar-like 4.8 seconds.
However, the list of ‘world firsts’ grows even longer when you consider that this will be the first electric vehicle with optional 11kW wireless inductive charging, which comes in the form of a cost-effective optional floor plate that provides charging without the need to plug it in.
Despite the gigantic amounts of power and range of capabilities offered by the electrified Cayenne, Porsche is still playing it safe by continuing to offer a range of powertrain options.
According to Matthias Becker, head of sales and marketing at Porsche, pure internal combustion engines and hybrid variants will be developed over the next decade.
In the UK, prices start at £83,200 for the Cayenne and £130,900 for the Cayenne Turbo, with order books now open. In the US, prices are set at $109,000 and $163,000 (around AU$168,000 and AU$250,000), respectively.
On the big screen
Alongside the welcome design changes to the exterior, the electric Cayenne will bring with it the largest display area ever seen inside the Porsche.
All this thanks to a new central “Flow Display”, featuring a curved surface, a fully digital instrument cluster with 14.25-inch OLED technology and an optional 14.9-inch passenger display.
There’s also an optional AR Head-Up Display that offers the equivalent of an 87-inch viewing area 10m in front of the vehicle…just in case you need even more digital visuals to be projected onto your retinas.
The German company also upped the ante with its new AI-powered voice assistant, which now understands “complex and interrelated queries, recognizes context and responds like a real conversationalist,” according to the brand.
This central Flow display and the optional passenger display can also host an increasing number of third-party applications, as Porsche opens its digital ecosystem to streaming, gaming and infotainment developers.
