Traffic police collect Rs4.46 billion from challans in Gujranwala

Fines almost tripled compared to the previous year; stricter enforcement leads to fewer road accidents

GUJRANWALA:

The city traffic police said they had issued over 750,000 challans for traffic violations and collected over Rs 4.46 billion in fines in 2025, officials said on Tuesday.

Authorities have attributed a marked drop in traffic accidents to stricter enforcement of traffic laws across the city.

According to official data, the city traffic police, under the supervision of Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ayesha Butt, have intensified checks in the city center and areas within the limits of the bypass roads.

Particular attention was paid to helmet use, seat belt use, tinted windows, non-standard and missing license plates, unregistered vehicles, driving without a license, underage driving and other violations.

In addition to challans, cases have been registered against hundreds of vehicle owners for serious traffic violations.

Authorities reported that in 2025, traffic police issued a total of 168,470 driving licenses, the majority of which were for motorcyclists.

An estimated 100,000 motorcycles are plying in Gujranwala, and the CTO’s office has launched a targeted campaign to ensure that motorcyclists obtain valid licenses.

The enforcement campaign resulted in more than 750,000 traffic violations recorded during the year.

These include 8,808 cases of one-way violations, 19,996 violations recorded during smog restrictions and 63,090 challans for not wearing helmets.

Thousands of motorists were also fined for driving without a license, using black tinted paper on their vehicle windows, driving on one wheel and illegal parking.

Authorities said fines collected during the year exceeded 4.46 billion rupees, almost three times more than the previous year, reflecting both increased enforcement and tougher penalties.

Under the revised regulations, minimum fines have been increased to Rs 2,000, drawing criticism from a section of the public.
