- CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 would cost nearly a billion dollars
- A Polish analyst says it costs around $390 million each for development and marketing, respectively.
- This comes shortly after the analyst claimed that new DLC was expected for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The next opus from CD Projekt Red in The Witcher the franchise is highly anticipated, with The Witcher 4 seemingly determined to vastly improve the RPG elements and realism of its predecessor – and it looks like the developer is following in Rockstar Games’ footsteps with GTA6.
And by that I mean there’s apparently a giant budget to support the RPG. As TweakTown reports, a Polish analyst, Mateusz Chrzanowski, claims that The Witcher 4 will cost CD Projekt Red around $800 million, of which $390 million would be spent on the game’s development – and the same amount on marketing. This is a rough estimate based on converting PLN 1.4 billion into dollars.
This latest rumor comes from the same source that recently suggested that CD Projekt Red would release a new DLC expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in May 2026. While there are no details on this yet, it’s worth noting that CD Projekt Red is rumored to be working on multiple projects, so this isn’t a far-fetched claim.
It’s harder to believe the claim about the size of the budget here, though. An expenditure of approximately 800 million dollars for The Witcher 4 would place the title in the same range as top games such as GTA6, which, according to speculation, incurred production costs of up to $2 billion.
It remains true, however, that major releases like these have high expectations behind them (especially GTA6), and this will obviously have a high price in terms of production and marketing.
The majority of modern triple-A games feature huge budgets, and a notable example is Insomniac. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which reportedly had a budget of $315 million.
This is a trend that has been going on for several years and shows no signs of slowing down.
Analysis: Big budgets for games are not always justified
Big budgets don’t always mean big successes in the video game industry.
Take for example the case of Concord from Firewalk Studios (admittedly not a single-player game, but certainly an eye-opening affair in terms of a high-profile failure). It reportedly cost $400 million, and in case you didn’t know, Concord was a massive failure that led to a shutdown two weeks after launch, and the closure of the developer responsible.
This is just one example of massive budgets being wasted, and while I doubt it will happen with CD Projekt Red’s project. The Witcher 4I still have some concerns – especially after Cyberpunk 2077The disastrous launch of.
The only developer I’ve seen consistently increase their production costs is Rockstar Games, with critically acclaimed releases like Red Dead Redemption 2 and of course, GTA 5.
