- Nintendo released a new trailer for Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics
- The collection arrives February 17, 2026
- It includes two new games and a color change option.
Nintendo has released a trailer for its upcoming Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics collection which will be available exclusively to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.
First, the trailer confirms a February 17, 2026 release date for the collection. Additionally, an impressive seven titles will be available on day one. These are:
- Galactic Pinball
- 3D Tetris
- Teleroboxer
- Virtual Boy Wario Land
- Innsmouth Manor (Innsmouth no Yakata)
- Golf
- Red alarm
Nine additional games are expected to arrive throughout 2026, but do not yet have a concrete release date. They will be:
- Mario Clash
- Mario’s tennis
- Jack Bros.
- Space Invaders Virtual Collection
- Virtual bowling
- Vertical force
- V-Tetris
- Zero runners
- Dragon Hopper
The last two in the latter, Zero runners And D-hopper, are particularly important additions. Both games had never been released before, although they were in apparently complete state. The first is a version of Virtual Boy F-Zero, while the latter is a platform game descended from Intelligent Systems, better known today as the main developer of the Fire Emblem franchise.
Look on it
So that makes a total of 16 games coming in the first year. If we subtract these two unreleased titles, that still represents the vast majority of Virtual Boy’s original library, which only included 22 games. For now, games like Nester’s Funky Bowling, SD Gundam Dimension War, And Aquatic world, which would likely be surrounded by some degree of licensing bureaucracy.
Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics will also have the usual array of quality-of-life features, including remappable controls and a rewind function for when you make mistakes or want to redo a section.
Perhaps the best addition, however, will be the ability to change the primary color of the image. The trailer shows the red melting the retina transforming into yellow, green, and even grayscale. Oddly, this is a feature planned for a later date and will not be available at launch.
Personally, I still don’t like that the Virtual Boy device for Nintendo Switch (or its smaller cardboard counterpart) is a requirement to play these games. That’s a pretty big investment, especially when you take into account that you’ll also need the more expensive Expansion Pack tier to access the library in the first place.
I’m sure Nintendo would prefer players to enjoy the unique stereoscopic 3D effect found in all of these games. But I see no reason why they couldn’t also be enjoyed handheld in 2D form.
