- Riot Games is expected to lay off 80 staff members 2XKO team
- Despite the successful launch, the game appears to be underperforming by Riot’s standards.
- Version 1.0 of the game has only been available for a few weeks
2XKO Developer Riot Games is set to lay off a significant portion of the team that worked on the free-to-play tag fighting game.
In an update posted on the official Riot Games website, executive producer Tom Cannon detailed the motivations behind the decision.
“After much discussion and consideration, we are reducing the size of the 2XKO team,” he wrote.
“I want you to know that this decision was not made lightly. As we moved from PC to console, we saw consistent trends in the way players interacted with 2XKO. The game resonated with a passionate audience, but the overall momentum didn’t reach the level needed to support a team of this size in the long term. »
According to Kotaku, 80 employees are expected to be laid off, which represents about half of the total workforce. 2XKO development team. This is despite a relatively successful console launch. The game finally arrived on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Series S in January, after a long period of early access on PC.
During its console launch period, 2XKO has become one of the most downloaded free titles of the month, beating out equally free competitors like Marvel Rivals And High Guard.
Cannon rightly acknowledged that this news “will raise questions and concerns.” He promised that updates would continue to be shared and that 2XKO will continue to receive content.
Riots
Look on it
Ultimately, it’s not a good look. 2XKO has already had its share of controversies of varying magnitudes. From its long development period to launching with a pitiful roster of 11 characters (for a 2v2 fighting game, no less), this latest news hasn’t exactly inspired confidence in the player base.
“I can’t wait 2XKO to never participate in another fighting game tournament after this year,” one user posted on Bluesky.
“I thought I was pretty cynical about Riot and 2XKObut it turns out I wasn’t cynical enough,” wrote another.
The layoffs have understandably been devastating for some. “Ten years later 2XKO12 years at Riot and I was fired with 30 minutes notice lol. This is going to take a while,” wrote a Bluesky user who apparently worked on the project.
What makes this even more unfortunate is that 2XKO was largely received positively by its players. The usual complaints of free-to-play are of course the microtransactions and the overall business model, but the base game seems to be fun and engaging.
I could be flippant and say 2XKO developers were punished for not immediately logging in League of Legends Or Teamfight Tactics figures, but perhaps there is some truth in it.
