- Resonant control does not use AI generative content “at all”
- Markus Mäki, interim CEO of Remedy, confirmed that there is “varied interest” in the technology within the company.
- He adds that the company is tracking the progression of AI to see if anything can be used “ethically” that would “add value to the player.”
Markus Mäki, interim CEO of Remedy, has confirmed that the studio’s next major title, Resonant controldoes not use generative AI. However, he admits there is interest in the technology at the company.
Speaking during Remedy’s latest earnings Q&A (via Game Developer), Mäki discussed the controversial technology that has seeped into every facet of the gaming industry over the past few years.
“I believe a lot in player value, that is, doing things that really add something to the gaming experience and the player experience. I also believe a lot in the creative people on our team and the fact that they know the best ways to add that value. There is varied interest from different professions at Remedy in studying these AI tools,” Mäki said.
Despite “varied interest” in these tools, Mäki was firm when confirming that the Control The sequel doesn’t feature any use of Gen-AI, but that the company is tracking its progress to see if anything can be used “ethically” that would “add value to the player.”
“I can say that, for example, Resonant control does not use AI generative content at all. But making big promises about the future is quite difficult at this point,” the interim CEO said.
“We are actively monitoring developments [of generative AI tools] and see if there is something that is really ethically in the right place, and that can add value to the player and that our teams want to use. So, of course, it’s an easier decision. »
It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the presence of Gen-AI in the video game industry.
The State of the Gaming Industry 2026 report (via GameSpot) states that 52% of game developers believe generative AI is a threat to the industry, an increase from 30% last year, while only 7% said it had a positive impact.
One anonymous game developer even told the report’s investigators, “I’d rather leave the industry than use generative AI.” »
There are obvious ethical reasons against using AI for creative projects that impact real artists, but also the threat of layoffs that game developers face as companies pivot to the technology.
Its use has even reached the point of causing an increase in the cost of RAM, which has had negative effects on hardware inventory.
In addition, Sony has reportedly obtained a new patent for AI-generated podcasts that would be voiced by its PlayStation characters.
Last month, it patented new AI technology that will take control of PlayStation games when the player is stuck, and even a patent for a touchscreen controller that has no buttons or thumbsticks.
