The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has removed three political parties from its list of registered entities due to their failure to hold intra-party elections as required by law.

According to an official notification, Pakistan National Party (PNP), National Democratic Party (NDP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Nizam (PTN) have been delisted for failing to hold elections within the stipulated time.

The move is part of the ECP’s efforts to enforce the Political Parties Ordinance, 2002, which requires all political parties in Pakistan to hold regular intra-party elections to ensure democratic practices and responsibility.

In a contrasting development, the ECP recognized Tehreek-e-Suba Hazara Pakistan (TSHP) as a registered political party, after its successful intra-party elections in November 2024.

Moreover, last week, the ECP also roped in Awaam Pakistan (AP), after the party held its intra-party elections in June 2024.

Awaam Pakistan, formed by former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, will be led by Abbasi as chairman and Ismail as general secretary. Both leaders had earlier been associated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), but left the party after differences with its leaders.
