American speed skater Mia Manganello won the United States’ first individual long track medal at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games by winning a bronze medal.
The 36-year-old succeeds Canadian Olympian Ivanie Blondin, who won silver, and Dutchwoman Marijke Groenewoud, who won gold.
This medal marks Manganello’s first individual Olympic podium after three appearances at the Games.
Speaking to reporters, Manganello said emotionally: “It’s the perfect ending. I dreamed of this moment.”
Manganellos’ victory also gives the Americans their first speed skating medal at these Games after a series of near misses.
Previously, American skaters finished fourth in the 1,000 meters, 1,500 meters and the team pursuit, and fifth in the 500 meters.
The Netherlands completed a series of mass start races, with Jorrit Bergsma winning the gold medal in the men’s event earlier on Saturday.
At 40, Bergsma surprised the competition with a bold move in the third round, winning his second Olympic gold medal.
The Netherlands finished the Milan Cortina Games with five gold medals in speed skating, a record among all countries.
For Manganello, the bronze medal was the fourth medal the United States has won in long track, the largest medal won by the country at the Games.
