KARACHI: Residents of several areas of Karachi felt the tremors of an earthquake on Friday, sending people rushing out of their homes and offices.
The National Seismic Monitoring Center (NSMC) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded a magnitude 4 earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter about 100 kilometers south of Karachi.
The tremors were reported from Landhi, Khurramabad, Malir and Korangi, according to the NSMC.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. You should know that the country’s most populous coastal metropolis has experienced multiple tremors in recent months.
Before this earthquake, Karachi last experienced seismic activity on March 10, 2026, when a 3.2 magnitude earthquake shook parts of the city, including Malir, to a depth of about 35 kilometers.
On January 19, 2026, a major earthquake of magnitude 5.8 shook Islamabad, with tremors originating from a depth of 10 kilometers.
This was also felt in Swat of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Hunza of Gilgit-Baltistan, where residents reported partial damage to over 100 houses, with cracks in the walls.
Landslides caused the closure of roads and trails, including sections of the Karakoram Highway.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and was located about 50 kilometers north-northwest of Barishal, at a depth of 35 kilometers.
Since June 2025, Karachi has felt dozens of minor to moderate tremors, highlighting the region’s ongoing seismic activity.
Pakistan straddles the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making the country vulnerable to earthquakes.
The region can be difficult to navigate in a crisis: in 2015, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Pakistan and Afghanistan killed nearly 400 people in rugged terrain, hampering relief efforts.
The country was also hit by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people and left around 3.5 million homeless, mainly in Azad Kashmir.
Balochistan experienced an earthquake in 2021 that killed at least 20 people and injured more than 10, with landslides hampering initial relief efforts in the remote mountainous district of Harnai.
