- Nintendo says backwards compatibility on Nintendo Switch 2 was the ‘best decision’ for all consumers
- The company had in mind current Switch owners who had purchased software.
- The Switch 2 will allow users to play physical and digital Switch games
Nintendo said Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatibility was the “best decision” for all consumers.
Alongside last week’s long-awaited console announcement, it was finally confirmed – after a series of leaks – that the Switch’s successor will feature backwards compatibility, allowing users to play games from their Switch library on the new console.
In a new statement to GameFile following the hardware reveal, Nintendo explained that the decision was made with current Switch owners and those who already have a library of Switch games in mind.
“Many consumers play Nintendo Switch, and we decided that the best direction to take would be for consumers to be able to play their already purchased Nintendo Switch software on the successor to Nintendo Switch,” Nintendo said.
“With this thought, Nintendo Switch 2 makes it possible to play exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 games, as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.”
Although it has been confirmed that the upcoming handheld will play exclusive Switch 2 games, as well as Nintendo Switch games, Nintendo noted in the trailer that some Switch games “may not be supported or fully supported.” compatible with Nintendo Switch 2″.
These games, however, haven’t been shared yet and the company has yet to announce any Switch 2 exclusive titles.
A Nintendo Direct showcase has been confirmed for April 2, 2025, which will hopefully provide us with a closer look at the console’s software in action.
