- Marvel’s Wolverine director Mike Daly says violence was an important element in bringing the character to life
- Daly says Insomniac ‘didn’t want to go too far’ to keep the game ‘grounded’
- He confirms that players who are not fans of gore can deactivate it in the settings
Insomniac Games has confirmed that players can tone down the violence in Marvel’s Wolverine in the accessibility settings.
Speaking in an interview with IGN following WolverineThe expanded gameplay was revealed during Sony’s State of Play on June 2, with game director Mike Daly explaining how Insomniac was dedicated to bringing the character to life.
If you’re familiar with the Marvel hero, you’ll know that he’s quite violent and is often seen shredding his enemies with his claws, and Daly said that was something the team knew needed to be a “key element” of the game.
“From the beginning of the project, we knew that the most important thing was to bring the Wolverine fantasy to life. Not only that, but to make it the ultimate Wolverine fantasy,” Daly said. “And when you look at the aspects of the character and all the stories that he went through throughout his history, it was clear that violence was a key part of it.
“So that was never really in question, and it was kind of built into the way we made our decisions from the beginning. So we knew we were going to have to bring that out in gameplay, put it in your hands as a player, make it part of the story.”
However, Daly said that to keep the story and character in a “grounded world with believable things happening”, Insomniac “didn’t want to go beyond that”.
“We really wanted to hit the nail on the head on what is the best representation of Wolverine, what meets fan expectations, and what will keep the claw-fighting action satisfying throughout the game,” explained the director.
“So those are the things that we calibrated ourselves on. You can see the results for yourself because we put them in the trailer. The way I would describe it is that we were unapologetically violent. We knew that we would have to do that to accomplish our ultimate mission. And because of that, the gameplay retains its satisfaction.”
The latest gameplay trailer showed this violence in action, and it gets pretty bloody and might turn off some players; we are far from the attenuated tone of Insomniac Spiderman games.
That’s why Insomniac implemented an accessibility feature that allows players to turn off the gore if they’re not too keen.
“That being said, we know this isn’t for everyone, and because we knew this was going to be a big part of the game from the start, we also implemented an accessibility feature to turn off the gore,” Daly confirmed.
“It’s clearly integrated into the game in different ways, and so it’s a nuanced feature that’s very selective about what we show, what we censor, turning off blood and things like that, just to make it more palatable for people who don’t really want to have that part of the experience.”
Marvel’s Wolverine will launch on September 15 on PS5. Pre-orders are now live.
