During the European Championship between Denmark and Finland in June 2021, play was suspended after a terrifying scene where Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in the first half of the match.

Play immediately stopped at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium, where Eriksen lay unconscious on the grass. CPR was needed to revive him, as medical staff and teammates circled around his distressed body, hoping for the best.

Eriksen received 10 minutes of medical treatment and was then taken off the field on a stretcher with an oxygen mask around his mouth. Images then began circulating on social media, showing Eriksen awake and with a hand on his forehead.

Eriksen was then transferred to hospital and stabilized.

Since that time, Eriksen has been fitted with a heart-starting device called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

Danish team doctor Morten Boesen released a statement via multiple media outlets, stating that “Eriksen’s pacemaker is responding as it should.”

“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him,” Boesen’s statement said.

“He will not undergo further tests at the hospital to determine the cause of the incident. We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is fine and he asked me to greet all the players and tell them that he is fine.”
