Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden was arrested early Saturday morning, June 13, in Houston for illegally carrying a weapon.
However, hours later, the 36-year-old NBA star was released on $100 bail from the Harris County Jail. He is due in court on June 22.
According to police reports, Harden was walking through downtown Houston with his friends. The incident occurred at 3:40 a.m. when a police officer noticed a handgun in the cup holder of his Mercedes. After investigation, Harden confirmed the gun belonged to him, leading to his arrest.
In Texas, the law allows the open carry of handguns, provided the weapon is always holstered. This offense is punishable by up to one year in prison and a $4,000 fine as a class A misdemeanor.
According to reports, Harden was at a hookah lounge with his friends before the incident occurred.
The Cavaliers released a statement saying they were aware of the matter and were gathering more information about it. There is no official statement from the NBA at this time.
The arrest made things difficult for Harden as a critical decision regarding his $42.3 million player option for next season looms. He is supposed to retire and sign a multi-year contract with Cleveland, but the controversy could have changed the situation.
Harden, who won the Most Valuable Player award in 2018 and has earned 11 All-Star selections, came to the Cavaliers via a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers in February. Harden averaged 20.5 points per game for the Cavaliers.
