- Americans admit to the hoarding of digital files with 77% saying that they had too much data
- The management of their files leave a third of people feeling overwhelmed and anxious
- Young generations should spend $ 40,000 on cloud storage throughout their lives
Americans are faced with an increasing digital size problem, according to a recent survey by Compass Datacenters, which revealed more than three -quarters (77%) of admitted people – without surprise – to have more digital files than they need.
Between January 21 and February 5, 2025, the ballot of 1,000 people revealed that digital hoarding is not only out of control, but many do not even know how to start managing it.
A third of the respondents said that managing their digital files made them feel overwhelmed, anxious or stressed. Only one 10% said he felt confident when it comes to deleting unnecessary files. Although they have recognized that excess data can slow down devices, drain batteries and make the search for important information more difficult, they were not ready to hit the deletion key and act.
An expensive habit
Digital size is not only a minor drawback – it can also be expensive, because storage prices are climbing. The survey revealed that the young generations, in particular, pay to store files rather than deleting them.
The authors of the survey note: “Accounting of an inflation rate of 3%, assuming that a 25 -year -old child pays $ 20 / month for data storage up to the age of 85, they will spend $ 40,000 during their life in digital storage.”

How to unclutter your data
Digital clearance should not be a huge project. Taking small regular measures can protect devices, save money and reduce stress.
The first starting point is to clean your photo library. Delete blurred plans, duplicates and old screenshots you no longer need. Atere to do this month rather than waiting for years to spend.
Then sort your applications. Check what you have and what you really use. If you have applications that you have not opened for months, get rid of them. You can always reinstall everything you need.
Review your download file and your reception box by e-mail. Former receipts, newsletters and random files add up quickly. Focus on emails with attachments to release the most storage space.
Remember to configure a simple backup system with an external hard drive instead of paying for cloud storage. Hard drives and SSDs with 4 storage to storage are available for a single purchase price which is much lower than what you would pay for years of cloud costs.
Plan a day of “digital spring cleaning” sometimes a year. Treat it as cleaning a closet – a little boring at first, but gratifying once done.
By being more aware of the digital size you create and keep, it becomes easier to manage over time. Acting today can save you greater hassles on the road.
