Islamabad:
After a break of almost seven months, the chief judge of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi summoned a meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on July 12.
The SJC is a constitutional body authorized to carry out judges of the higher courts for fault.
CJP Afridi is currently its president. The other members include judge Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, the judge Munib Akhtar, the chief judge of the High Court of Lahore, Alia Neelum, and the chief judge of the Sindh High Court, Junaid Ghaffar.
The Council currently examines various complaints of misconduct against the judges of the Superior Court.
During its previous meeting in December of last year, the Council discussed the amendments proposed to the code of conduct of the judges under article 209 (8) of the Constitution, as well as the revisions of the procedure of the investigation of the Supreme Judicial Council, 2005.
A committee led by Judge Munib Akhtar was set up to prepare the modifications proposed to the Code of Driving and the Investigation Procedure.
It is planned that the Committee will present its proposals at the next meeting.
Last year, six judges from the High Court of Islamabad (IHC) asked for advice from the SJC concerning the interference of executive agencies in legal functions.
However, instead of resuming the case within the SJC, the chief judge Qazi Faez Isa initiated the Suo Motu procedure on the issue.
