The wait for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 won’t be long. With filming for the next chapter of the HBO TV Original already underway ahead of its 2027 debut, the countdown is on for release.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 release date: what we know
AKotSK season 2 does not yet have a confirmed launch date. However, it was among many HBO shows renewed for another season last November. At the time, HBO also confirmed that it would premiere in 2027, so we won’t have to wait long for the high fantasy series to return.
The cameras are already rolling on the next chapter as well. Talk to AV Club showrunner Ira Parker revealed “we’re already editing scenes together,” which bodes well for next year’s launch.
If — and it’s a big if — principal photography and post-production on the second season of the HBO Max show are completed well before the end of 2026, I wouldn’t rule out January or February 2027. Fingers crossed that’s the case.
Is there a trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2?
No, and I would bet there won’t be one until late 2026 at the earliest. Once one is published, I will add it to this section of the guide.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 cast: confirmed and rumored
Full spoilers follow for AKotSK season 1. Possible spoilers for season 2 are also discussed.
Here is the confirmed casting for AKotSK season 2 so far:
- Peter Claffey as Duncan “Dunk” the Great
- Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon V ‘Egg’ Targaryen
Currently, Dunk and Egg are the only two characters who will return next season. This is because season 2 is based on The Sworn Swordaka the second story in the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” short story trilogy. This book does not present the individuals who appear in AKotSKthe first season of or The hedge knightthat is, the first entry in the aforementioned literary saga. In short, Maekar and Aerion Targaryen, Lyonel Baratheon and Raymun Fossoway will not show up.
Still, there will be new characters to love and hate in equal measure – and, speaking to The AV Club, Parker has already highlighted three that viewers will want to keep an eye out for.
“The Sworn Sword…is my favorite novella in many ways, with Rohanne Webber or the Red Widow, Ser Bennis and Ser Eustace, who are these classic characters,” Parker said. “I can’t say much, but we have three absolutely brilliant actors coming in to play these roles… [but] it’s nice to see [season two] slowly come together.

While Parker is keeping mum on which actors will play the aforementioned trio, Claffey downplayed suggestions that The Witcher alumnus Henry Cavill will join the cast.
As reported by Thrones X/Twitter fan account Westerosies (see above), Claffey blocked his co-star Ansell from mentioning something to see with Cavill at a recent fan convention. As rumors swirled about Cavill’s potential involvement, Claffey took to Instagram to throw even more cold water on those speculations.
Of course, it might be a mistake for Claffey to maintain the surprise that Cavill is part of the proceedings. I guess we’ll have to wait A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 to go out to find out.
Speculation on the story of a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, which could actually be titled A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms (more on why later), doesn’t have a plot synopsis yet.
However, that won’t stop us from telling his story. As I mentioned earlier, it will fit The Sworn Swordaka the second entry in George RR Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” franchise. Fans of the books will therefore already know what to expect.
But for the rest of you, know that potential spoilers immediately follow for AKotSK season 2. So if you don’t want to know anything else, skip to the next section and/or read my spoiler-free article. A Knight of the Seven KsThe end of season 1 of ingdoms explained the room instead.
Let’s start with the name of the upcoming season, which many expect to be called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2.
However, in one of the final scenes of last season, Egg informs Dunk that there are actually nine kingdoms, not seven. This results in a new title card, aka A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms (AKotNK), aired before the end credits of season 1 for the last time, leading some to believe that this is the official title of the next season.
So, will it be? In a conversation with Variety, Parker teased, “Maybe it’s because I’m becoming a little too jokey… People are going to react, and I’m going to react after not seeing it for a few months. And we’ll see. I like it. Enough wonderful creatives I’ve worked with have liked it too. It comes from an honest place. It’s all true. There are nine kingdoms at this point.”
The other big question on viewers’ minds is: where do Dunk and Egg go? I won’t reveal the locations they will visit, but Parker has already confirmed the return of a location that Thrones fans will know him. “They’re going to Dorne,” he admitted. “How much we cover, I’ll leave it up to people to tune into Season 2.”
As for the number of episodes, Parker confirmed to Collider that, like season 1, there will be six chapters, each lasting between 35 and 40 minutes.
For long-time fans of Martin’s literary works, this will come as no surprise. After all, each tale is a short story, meaning it tells a short story involving Dunk and Egg. But, given that season 2 will follow its predecessor in being as close to an authentic adaptation of its source material as possible. Parker told Collider that “we[‘ll] never change the story. The beginning is the beginning, the middle is the middle, and the end is the end. » There also won’t be many, if any, creative deviations from the original plot.
Has HBO already announced A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 3?
Nothing has been publicly announced, but HBO would be crazy not to renew A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for at least one more season.
Indeed, with the latest installment in the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” book series – unless Martin writes another short story, which might be the case – being The mystery knightit would make sense for a third season to be given the green light.
When we consider that AKotSK season 1 averaged nearly 13 million weekly viewers on HBO alone before its sixth and final episode aired (per Variety) on February 22 and 23, there is clearly also a desire to know more.
A third and final season might not be the end of the road for Dunk and Egg either. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker revealed that Martin shared with him 12 previews of Dunk and Egg’s never-before-seen stories that “take them through their lives.”
In an interview with The Wrap, Parker expressed his wish to “do four [seasons] with Egg the boy, four with Egg the prince and four with Egg the king – but do them every 10 years. So pick a pocket, Peter and Dexter can go away, have their careers, and then in 10 years we’ll come back, and we’ll do four more,” which would be a fun way to approach things creatively.
So there’s potential for a lot more chapters on HBO Max and many of the world’s top streaming services after season 3. And, given that Dunk and Egg have become as much a favorite of casual fans as they were of Thrones enthusiasts before AKotSK Start of season 1, the more seasons the better, I say.
