- The motility undergoes a ransomware attack exposing sensitive data of more than 766,000 customers
- Stolen data include SSNs, driving licenses and full contact details
- The company’s restored services, launched surveillance and provides free identity protection for victims
Motility Software Solutions, a company providing Automobile Dealership Management Software (DMS), recently undergone a ransomware attack during which hundreds of thousands of customers have lost their sensitive data.
The company confirmed the news in a file to the Maine prosecutor’s office, noting that the attack took place on August 11, 2025 and was spotted about a week later, on August 19.
The motility saw the intrusion after having undergone an “unusual activity” in certain servers. This unusual activity has proven to be a cryptor preventing the company from accessing parts of its IT infrastructure.
Thousands of victims
“Although malicious software mainly limits our access to internal data, forensic evidence suggests that before encryption, the actor may have deleted limited files containing personal data from customers,” said the ad.
Motivality software solutions specialize in software for the vehicle industry, including recreational vehicles, trailers, buses and marine vehicles. It offers a web platform that incorporates CRM, accounting, stocks, service planning and reporting tools to rationalize dealership operations.
The motility did not name the authors, but said that it had stolen comprehensive names, postal addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates, social security numbers (SSN) and driving license numbers. A total of 766,670 people were affected, but at the time of the press, nothing indicates that the information was used in the wild.
Usually cybercriminals use this data for identity theft, financial fraud, phishing attacks and the creation of false accounts. It also allows them to engage in social engineering, tax reimbursement scams and unauthorized access to sensitive services such as health care or government benefits. They can also sell it on the Dark Web to the most offender.
Fortunately, motility had a functional backup which allowed him to restore his services fairly quickly. To mitigate the threat, he has set up a surveillance of the dark net, committed advice and other data security suppliers, and now offers a year of free identity flight protection services.
