- New Apple TV device always on the right track for the end of 2025, says the report
- Apple would have planned to make it much cheaper
- The upgraded upgrades seem relatively minor and predictable
I have every generation of Apple TV from the first, and you will have to do my 4K Apple TV with my cold hands. So you might expect me to be really excited by the prospect of a brand new model later this year – after all, there have been three years of potential technological improvements since the last launch in 2022. But I feel quite disappointed by the last report.
According to MacRumors’ “reliable source”, Apple is “very likely” to replace the current Apple TV with a more recent model before the end of 2025.
This corresponds to the usual Apple calendar for its TV streamer; We are not on an annual iPhone-Esque upgrade cycle with these devices. But the only thing that seems really interesting to me about this reported device is that it can be considerably cheaper than the current model. It’s great if you don’t have one and you want one. But what’s going on if you already own Apple TV?
Apple TV 4K 2025: What to expect
The improvements reported are all fairly predictable: Wi-Fi 7 (that many Apple devices do not support; Apple’s current MacBook models are 6th), Apple’s own Bluetooth / Wi-Fi Apple design and a more recent processor. The 8K support is unlikely.
Don’t get me wrong. An even more reactive smoother processor would be good, just like the Passhrough for uncompressed audio (although this feature is also supposed to come to existing models).
But a key element of my lack of excitement is that the Apple TV 4K is already one of the best TV streamers and has been more on the software for years than the hardware – and things that disturb me, like Siri’s frequent incapacity to understand even very simple vocal research, is also software.
I want my television streamer to be the least interesting and the least flashy kit in my house: at the end of a long day, when the children finally went to bed or went out, I want to press a button, get a lot of things to watch and hit the game. As long as it looks and sounds well – and Apple TV + on Apple TV 4K is almost all that. I receive my recommendations for people and publications rather than AI or algorithms, so I am really interested in anything of AI.
And after years to hear about the next Apple TV will be the one that is ideal for the game, I am quite cynical about this: I have several consoles and pocket computers for me and the children, and we just don’t care about Apple TV.
It means that I really find it difficult to think of a feature that Apple could add that would make me want to upgrade beyond “look at the new brilliant!” that I am often a suction cup.
I hope that I am pleasantly surprised by the new model, but I suspect that this update will be mainly financial: a cheaper and slightly better version of what we already have to obtain new customers than exciting exciting customers.
It’s not just a new Apple TV is bad. The current is already so good.
