KARACHI:

Mian Amer Mahmood, businessman and former mayor of Lahore, has called for the creation of new administrative units across Pakistan, stressing that stronger local governments and better judicial performance have become necessary to manage a rapidly growing population.

Speaking at the ‘Imagine Pakistan 2030’ event in Karachi on Tuesday, he said the creation of new administrative units was the need of the hour, adding that Pakistan’s provincial structure was formed in a hurry and no longer matched the realities of the people.

He pointed out that all provinces are grappling with severe population pressures which have resulted in a shortage of basic facilities.

He said Pakistan has only five capitals despite its massive population, while the United States has 50 administrative units and China 31.

Mahmood also lamented that 44 percent of children in Pakistan are deprived of adequate nutrition and educational institutions must play a pivotal role in raising public awareness and preparing society for a more efficient administrative model.

Furthermore, he expressed concerns over the deterioration of the country’s judicial system, lamenting that the quality of judicial performance continues to decline.
