After having triggered the controversy during the presentation ceremony after the final of the Asian Cup 2025, India takes the dispute from the trophy of the winner at the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The Indian team refused to collect the trophy of the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Mohin Naqvi after defeating Pakistan in the final by five counters in Dubai on Sunday.
This decision would have occurred on the directives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI); However, Naqvi – who is also the president of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) – remained firm that he would present the trophy as president of ACC.
The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, has now confirmed the same thing to the Indian media.
“We have decided not to take the Trophy of the President of ACC, which happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan,” said Saikia, of the Indian media.
The dispute led to a brief delay in the presentation ceremony, which saw the Pakistani players collect their medals as a finalist.
The presenter Simon Doull confirmed the conclusion of the post-match ceremony without the winning team receiving the trophy.
“I was informed by the ACC that the Indian Cricket team will not allow its prices this evening. This will therefore conclude the post-match presentation,” said Doull.
The players of India Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma and Kuldeep Yadav, however, showed up to accept their individual prices.
Subsequently, the organizers took the Asian Cup trophy with them, leaving the Indian team waiting to get their hands on the title trophy.
The insistence of Naqvi on the presentation of the winning team trophy came despite the recent acts of the Indian team to drag politics in the game, with the Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav refusing a usual handful with Salman Ali Agha of Pakistan in his group game.
He repeated the same thing in their following two games, an act which was condemned by experts around the world.
The BCCI secretary has now confirmed his intention to file a complaint against NAQVI on the trophy line at the next ICC meeting, scheduled for November.
The secretary of the BCCI spoke in the same lines as the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who assimilated the victory in the cricket at “Operation Sindoor”, the name given to the series of strikes from India in Pakistan, which led to the martyrdom of several civilians.
“#Operationsindoor on the field of games. The result is the same – India wins! Congratulations to our cricket players,” wrote Modi in an article on X after the Asian Cup final.
A categorical about politics and war in sport, Saikia said that the “Indian armed forces delivered in the border area. Now the same has been repeated in Dubai”.
