- New memory upgrade rolling out today for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users
- ChatGPT can now remember what you asked it a year ago
- Click Sources to find the exact conversations you had
ChatGPT can now remember what you asked it a year ago and show you the exact conversation. This new memory upgrade for Plus and Pro users turns old chats into something searchable, permanent, and surprisingly useful.
His memory is now so good that you can ask him about the chili sauce recipe you requested a year ago, and there’s a good chance he’ll find it, with a link to the exact conversation.
ChatGPT never forgets
Before the most recent memory upgrade, if you asked ChatGPT what you were talking about a year ago, it would usually respond with some version of “I don’t actually have a window into your full chat history going back a year,” followed by a handful of fairly ineffective suggestions involving digging through your browser history.
Now, instead, it displays a “reminder” message and tells you exactly what you asked it a year ago.
As a Plus user, I just tried it out – and it’s actually pretty impressive. I typed:
“What did I ask you a year ago?”
What I received was a detailed description of everything I had asked him at the time. Apparently I was going through a phase where I was asking ChatGPT to analyze Nicolas Winding Refn’s films. If you’ve ever watched any, you’ll probably understand why I needed a little help.
we have improved memory. ChatGPT is now more reliable for finding and remembering details of your past chats, like recipes or workouts. Try it – and let us know what you think pic.twitter.com/6d2SavPPsiJanuary 15, 2026
Check your sources
With ChatGPT’s Sources feature, you can now go straight back to those exact chats from a year ago. Click Sources at the bottom of the reply and a panel opens, showing direct links to the original conversations.
It’s really impressive. Suddenly, cats no longer seem disposable. I’ve long since stopped trying to decipher the inner workings of Refn’s mind, but it was fascinating to revisit these conversations.
If you are a Plus or Pro user, you can try it for yourself right now. There’s no need to update ChatGPT: just ask it what you asked a year ago and you might be surprised by what comes back. The feature was rolled out globally today to all ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.
