Matter Labs, the developer firm behind the layer of layer 2 ZKSYNC, unveiled during the conference without authorization its new cryptographic prover “Airbender” on Tuesday.
A prover is a key component for layers -2, because it generates zero knowledge of knowledge which is then displayed on the blockchain of the base layer (in this case Ethereum) – a crucial process to link the two channels and ensure its safety.
The Zksync team says that Airbender is the fastest of its kind, offering evidence of Ethereum block in 35 seconds with a single GPU, exceeding its references from competitors.
Having fast speeds can save on transaction costs: “We are entering a fraction of a territory of a hundred which is critical for key use cases, including micropaies, high frequency trading and decentralized social social social,” said Alex Gluchowski, co-founder of Matter Labs, in an interview with Coindesk. “The faster evidence unlock a faster purpose, cheaper applications and, above all, evidence that can be generated anywhere, not just in massive GPU farms.”
The new prover, which is a virtual zero knowledge machine (ZKVM), is based on RISC-V, a more recent programming framework than the co-founder Ethereum Vitalik Buterin has suggested replacing the current EVM because it will make blockchain more efficient.
“We started building Zksync Airbender over a year ago because we saw where Ethereum had to go and what ZK applications would ask,” said Gluchowski. “Vitalik’s recent post has been a great affirmation of our plans, but this path has been in motion for some time.”
While Airbender is still at the start of its deployment, Matter Labs published an application that allows developers to test the new Prover. If everything goes as planned and the governance process of Zksync approves it, Airbender will be included in an upgrade of the protocol later this summer, according to Gluchowski.
“Zksync Airbender proves Ethereum blocks in 35 seconds using a single GPU. This is the start of something revolutionary: home -time applications UX and ZK of applications that can check on the fly.
