- Alibaba’s Damo Academy launched its first RISC-V quality server processor
- The C930 is designed for high performance IT, competing with Intel and AMD offers
- The open source of RISC-V prevents license costs and geopolitical restrictions
Alibaba launched its first RISC-V quality server processor, the C930, designed for high performance IT and positioned as an alternative to Intel Xeon and AMD Epyc processors.
The new chip, developed by Alibaba’s research arm, Damo Academy (Abbreviation of Discovery, Adventure, Momentum and Outlook), was announced at a conference in Beijing and is the latest addition to the series of Xuantie Risc-V processors of Alibaba, which includes the C910 launched in 2019 and the C920 published in 2023.
In response to US trade restrictions more and more oath on advanced technology exports, Chinese companies such as Damo Academy, Huawei and Tencent d’Alibaba increased efforts to develop their own tokens to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. RISC-V in particular gains field in China due to its open source nature, which allows companies to design and personalize processors without license costs or geopolitical risks associated with owner architectures such as X86 and ARM. The Chinese Academy of Sciences is expected to present its own Xiangshan processor based in Risc-V this year.
An aggressive investment
During the Beijing Conference, the Damo Academy also described the future plans of the Xuantie processors series, which includes the development of new fleas to use in AI Accelerators, automotive IT and high -speed interconnection.
A report of Morning post in southern ChinaWho belongs to Alibaba, says: “The launch of new fleas occurred a few days after the technology giant announced an aggressive investment plan of at least 380 billion yuan ($ 52 billion) in AI and cloud infrastructure over the next three years. The company, which is the largest Chinese cloud supplier, aims to meet the growing demand for AI models fueled by the recent popularity of low-cost and low cost models developed by the Deepseek start-up based in Hangzhou. »»
Reports add that expected expenses exceed Alibaba’s total expenditure in AI infrastructure over the past decade and will lead to the construction of more data centers across China.
The new C930 server processor should start shipping customers later in March 2025.
