- More than 86% of Iranians are now counting on VPNs to access the blocked content, according to the latest report by the Teherane E-Commerce Association
- The report also classifies Iran as 97th out of 100 countries for internet quality
- Iran prohibited the use of “unauthorized” VPNs in February 2024, de facto prohibiting their use without legal permit
According to the latest report by the Tehran Tehran, Internet users in Iran rely on VPN services to navigate the generalized internet disruptions published on Sunday, August 3.
The report, which classifies Iran as 97th out of 100 countries for internet quality, also criticizes the Iranian authorities for having failed to respond to calls to improve national connectivity, Iranian international reported.
The use of the best VPN services and other bypass tools, such as Starlink, continues to increase despite a law applied in February 2024 prohibiting their use without legal permit.
Internet crisis from Iran
“Our results show that 93% of young people and 86% of the general public use VPNs,” said Pouya Pirhosseinlou, head of the Internet Committee and infrastructure of the Tehrance E-Commerce Association, reported Iran International.
Despite certain internet restrictions such as those against WhatsApp in January, many websites remain filtered in Iran when writing the editorial’s time, forcing Iranians to find other ways to remain connected.
“Today, around 700,000 small businesses operate on Instagram. At least one million jobs are linked to this single platform. The disturbances here have directly struck the means of subsistence of people,” explains Pirhosseinlou.
However, via a reliable virtual private network (VPN), people in Iran can deceive their local Internet service provider and have access to Instagram and other limited platforms in seconds.
This increase in the use of VPNs can also contribute to the worsening of the precarious level of connectivity of the Iranian Internet. Citizens’ traffic is forced “through distant and ineffective routes and a drop speed”, explains Pirhosseinlou, adding: “Even on non -filtered websites, users keep VPN on – more degrading national internet performance.”
This is not the first time that the Tehran Electronic Commerce Association – an independent organization that has monitored and has been ashanging the Internet situation in Iran – has placed Iranian Internet among the worst world. In another report dated January 2024, the experts precisely blamed the lack of knowledge of the president and Iranian officials for this “self-inflicted” situation.
Commenting on the latest conclusions, Pirhosseinlou said: “Even if we had the American infrastructure, Iranian Internet would still be full of disruption due to the current filtering.[..] The filtering equipment is intrinsically disruptive. It causes serious dysfunctions in many emerging protocols and websites. “”
Use of a VPN in Iran – everything you need to know
Although they are increasingly a necessity, the authorities have actively worked to prevent the use of Iranian VPN over the years.
For example, in 2023, Iran was second behind China for VPN censorship. This also occurred in 2024, when Iran dominated the VPN censorship list in the country’s official application stores.
Not only does the target blocking VPN, however. The regime even challenged the legality of using a VPN in the first place. In February 2024, Iran prohibited “unauthorized” VPNs, de facto prohibiting their use without legal permit. Three months later, the government also raised an internet bill which could even endanger the use of VPNs.
Cybersecurity experts have also recently found a new Spyware campaign mainly targeting Iranian Android VPN users via fake infected VPN applications.
For all these reasons, it is very important to choose a reliable, secure and private service. I recommend consulting the Techradar up -to -date guide for the best free VPN on the market to download only the most secure gift on the market – Windscriber Free and Proton VPN Free are the best choices today.
Techradar criticisms also classify NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN as the best global (in order) at the time of writing, but you will have to pay a subscription to use these services.
