- Amazon to invest $35 billion in India by 2030
- The company wants to support more jobs and offer more AI training
- Google and Microsoft recently confirmed similar investments worth about half of Amazon’s, each
Amazon has pledged to invest $35 billion in India by 2030, with a focus on cloud and AI, but the money will also be earmarked for improving logistics.
This builds on $40 billion in existing investments made by Amazon since 2010, making it the country’s largest foreign investor.
In a press release, the company highlighted its previous successes, including helping to digitize more than 12 million small businesses in the country and supporting approximately 2.8 million direct, indirect and seasonal jobs in 2024 alone.
Amazon to almost double its existing investments in India by 2030
“We are honored to have been part of India’s digital transformation journey over the last 15 years, with Amazon’s growth in India perfectly aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat,” said Amit Agarwal, Senior Vice President, Emerging Markets.
By 2030, the company wants to support 3.8 million direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs per year. The company also wants to quadruple the cumulative number of e-commerce exports it enables, to $80 billion by 2030, up from $20 billion according to the most recent statistics.
India is one of the fastest growing AI spending markets in the APAC region, and it is likely that Amazon sees a major opportunity there due to the lack of IT infrastructure.
Key to Amazon’s India strategy is supporting the government’s vision of ‘AI for All’. Amazon wants to put AI in the hands of 15 million small businesses by the end of the decade and provide AI education opportunities to four million schoolchildren.
But Amazon isn’t the only company investing billions in India: Google recently spent $15 billion to establish its first AI Hub in the country and connect the country to more underwater cable networks. Alongside Amazon’s announcement, Microsoft also announced a $17.5 billion investment to help bring AI to the population level.
