During the decade and more since Amazon introduced its range of Smart Echo speakers, we use “Alexa” to solve them. This is the word of the watch, and soon, like Alexa +, will mark its most significant IA shine, but the material is always officially known as Echo Dot, Echo Show, etc. But if a new report is an indication, it could change, and we could end up calling an echo program an Alexa show.
After a notice of a reader, the penis was able to confirm that sometimes you could see an echo program listed as an Alexa program on Amazon.com. I tried to recreate this test or this problem without success, but I really hope that it will become a real thing.
The reality is that no one thinks of their Amazon smart speakers as “echo” devices. We call them Alexas because it is the name they answer. We never said, “Echo, what is the weather tomorrow?” Maybe if Amazon had taken this road in 2015, we could say that they are really all echo devices.
Echo has never been a big name.
The Dictionary of Oxford defines echo as:
“A sound or a series of sounds caused by the reflection of the sound waves of an area of the surface to the listener.”
If all the different echo devices were simply speakers, it might have meaning. Echo smart speakers do not reflect our voices and requests. They listen, think, and they react, and don’t just bounce what we said.
In addition, the combination of names is not much better. “Echo Show” is not great. It ends up looking like “an echo you can see”. Nothing says, “intelligence more a display”.
Now let’s try “Alexa Show”. We already know what Alexa means, and the combo instantly becomes “smarts you can see”.
Just imagine
Even if Amazon deploys an Alexa much smarter and more generator with Alexa +, I do not see the need to tighten a ” +” in various product names. This is an upgrade for which you pay, and not everyone will want to do it. However, putting “Alexa” at the front and in the product center is probably an intelligent way to encourage more adoption Alexa +.
It tickles me to imagine the whole Amazon line of the best Alexa speakers, many of which are part of our best list of intelligent speakers, reshaped around the ideal of the brand “Alexa”:
- Alexa Dot
- Alexa Spot (for more simplification, combine with above)
- Alexa Studio
- Alexa Pop
- Frames Alexa
- Alexa headphones
- and so on
I would even say that the brand could extend to other native Amazon devices such as the fire stick line (Alexa Fire Stick) and Fire tablets (Tablet Alexa Fire). Kindles would only make sense if Amazon decides to integrate certain basic Alexa features (unlikely, however, because most people read their offline Kindles).
A dose of reality
As much as I want that Amazon fully adopts the Alexa brand on all these devices, this will probably not happen.
When I questioned Amazon directly on the test or the problem, they launched a giant bucket of cold water at the idea of a major product brand change. A spokesperson for Amazon sent this comment:
“I would not read too much. Customers like both Echo and Alexa, and search for our products in different ways – we have experienced an experience to better understand the discovery of products, but that does not mean that something will change.”
By reading this, however, the message is not “it will never change”. Instead, they said: “… that doesn’t mean something will change.”
It’s like when I ask my wife if she thinks we will win the lottery and say that she says: “Almost not”, and I always answer: “So, you say there is a chance …”
Leaving echo and adopting Alexa everywhere is an intelligent decision and I still hope that Amazon will go from experience to strategic update. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.
