- Amazon is the “first renewable energy business buyer in Europe”
- 10 European countries have obtained solar and wind investments
- Amazon wants to be in net-zero carbon by 2040
Amazon has boldly declared that it is now the “best renewable energy business buyer in Europe”, which gives him another chain to his bow against Microsoft and Google.
In 2024 alone, the electronic and cloud computing giant says that it added 26 renewable energy projects and 20 on -site installations from top to Europe, mainly composed of solar and wind parks.
The largest beneficiary of Amazon energy investments in 2024 was Spain, with 15 new solar and wind parks and two other solar installations on site.
Amazon bets very large on European renewable energies
The total scope of Amazon now covers more than 230 solar and wind projects across Europe, its renewable energy portfolio generating 9 GW of energy – enough to supply the equivalent of 6.7 million European houses per year .
Italy, Greece, Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the Czech Republic have also benefited from in-depth solar investments, Northern Ireland and Portugal receiving investments in wind farms.
“The increase in the quantity of renewable energy on European electricity networks is the fastest and cheapest means of helping the economy of Europe to decarbonize on a large scale and to fight against change Climate, “noted the Emea energy director of Amazon for Europe, Lindsay McQuade.
Amazon has not yet published its report on sustainable development of 2024, but in 2023, the company said that it used “lower carbon materials” like steel and concrete, and changed it for wood , to save 46,700 tonnes of CO2e that year – the same thing for a number of emissions that 11,100 American cars would produce in 12 months.
AWS also recalls its backup generators, with sites in Ireland, Sweden and Oregon, now using hydrotraitée vegetable oil for fuel rather than diesel.
The head of sustainability, Kara Hurst, confirmed Amazon’s plans to break the plans of the Paris Agreement, reaching clean carbon emissions from zero a decade earlier in 2040. She also confirmed that the whole company had reached 100% renewable energy consumption seven years earlier in 2023.
Society also wants to be positive for water by the end of this decade – a subject of controversy in the world of data centers, where powerful computers consume large amounts of water for cooling.
