An “ evaluation of the humanitarian impact ” of Pakistani floods

The United Nations:

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed sorrow against devastating floods in Pakistan who killed hundreds of people and moved more than a million.

“The secretary general is deeply saddened by recent floods in northern Pakistan, which would have won more than 400 lives,” said his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric in a statement.

The disaster, caused by a “severe monsoon exacerbated by climate change”, affected some 1.5 million people, leaving hundreds of thousands of people who need humanitarian aid, according to the press release.

He also noted that “more than 3,000 houses, more than 400 schools and around forty health establishments have been damaged”.

The UN chief congratulated Pakistan’s response efforts, adding that he “congratulated the Pakistani authorities for having moved more than a million people in Punjab”.

He also “expresses his solidarity with the government and the people of Pakistan, extends his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a rapid recovery to those who have been injured”.

The press release indicates that the UN and its partners “work in close collaboration with the Pakistani authorities to quickly assess the humanitarian impact of floods, identify the needs and fill the shortcomings in the response”.

He added that “the emergency aid coordinator Tom Fletcher published $ 600,000 in the regional humanitarian group to support rescue and recovery efforts, and discussions are underway with the government on a response plan”.
