- Google launched a new Android Emergency Live Video feature
- This allows you to show responders a live feed from your phone’s camera in the event of an emergency.
- Currently, it’s only available in the United States and parts of Germany and Mexico, but it may launch elsewhere soon.
If you own an Android phone, you may now have access to a feature that could one day save your life – or that of a loved one, as Google rolls out what it calls Android Emergency Live Video.
This feature allows you to share live video from your phone’s camera during an emergency call or text message exchange. So if, for example, there is a car accident or medical emergency and you speak to emergency services, they will be able to send a request to view live video from your phone.
You can accept the request with just one click, the stream is encrypted therefore secure and you can choose to stop sharing the video at any time.
But it seems like a potentially very useful feature, allowing first responders to have a better idea of the situation and potentially better guiding you through life-saving steps such as CPR.
A great idea with limited availability
This seems like an obvious idea – so much so that I’m surprised we haven’t seen this before, but better late than never.
Android Emergency Live Video is supported on Android phones running Android 8 and above with Google Play Services, so this should be most of them, and no setup is required.
That said, at the moment it only works in the United States, as well as parts of Germany and Mexico. However, Google says it is “working closely with public safety organizations around the world to expand this capability to more regions.” So I hope we see this in other places soon.
