KARACHI:

Another incident, highlighting the continuing dangers of manholes in Karachi, occurred in Manghopir, where a five-year-old girl narrowly escaped death after falling into a drain outside a private school.

According to police, the incident took place near Garam Chashma in Union Committee No. 2, where first-grade student Inayah Amin slipped into the manhole while returning home with her classmates after school. Other children raised the alarm, prompting a passerby to rescue her in time. Fortunately, the manhole was four to five feet deep and contained little sewage.

The child’s parents rushed to the school after learning of the incident. The police also immediately arrived at the scene. SHO Manghopir Zubair Nawaz confirmed that “several manholes in the area were discovered”, adding that the girl was only saved thanks to the timely action of a passerby.

The city president, Nawaz Brohi, was also called to the scene. He said manhole covers had been given to the UC president, but he questioned why they had not been placed.

A day ago, three-year-old Amara fell into a manhole discovered in Sector 12-D of Baldia City. However, local residents rushed to the scene and managed to get her out. The girl was slightly injured.

According to area residents, although the viral images prompted municipal authorities to cover the manhole involved in the incident, several other manholes in the neighborhood still remain uncovered.

Even the tragedy in which a toddler lost his life after falling into an uncovered manhole near NIPA failed to shake the civic authorities from their apathy as no measures were taken to prevent such fatal incidents.
