We expect Apple to reveal the iPhone 17 range in September, and a new rumor indicates a name change for the most expensive model of programming – a rumor that has swirl for a few years now.
According to the famous Eyes’ forecaster1122 (via macrumors), the iPhone 17 Pro Max will actually be called the iPhone 17 Ultra. This is apparently based on investors and sources information inside the supply chain.
If the phone previously known as the iPhone 17 Pro Max indeed obtains a name change, it would be the first ultra phone published by Apple – although it has already used the ultra label for some of its Apple Silicon chips, and of course the Apple Watch Ultra series.
We have already heard this rumor, however, both for the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 16 – and in these cases, the names have not changed. It may be the year when Apple finally decides to shake off its approach to the name of the iPhone.
Hardware and software
In theory, we could then look at a range that includes the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Ultra. There is a certain cleanliness to have a single additional word after each of the three additional variants.
That said, the same prediction also suggests that the iPhone 17 air name is not yet fixed. This super -hand model, replacing the iPhone 16 Plus, was presented in many leaks – but it seems that Apple has not yet decided to call it.
The iPhone 17 Ultra (if it is its name) should also be reduced with a smaller dynamic island, a steam chamber for additional cooling (and improved performance) and increased battery capacity – which will add to its thickness.
We have already heard that iOS 19 is also planned for a major overhaul, so it seems that it will be quite the year for Apple in terms of hardware and software. We should have our first preview of iOS 19 in June at Apple WWDC 2025.
