- A Mac Pro was again a launch later this year
- He will come with an ultra M4 based on indices taken from the Apple internal code
- M4 Uitra could work with a CPU of 32 cores and a GPU of 80 hearts in theory
The next iteration of Mac Pro could see Apple feeding the computer with an ultra M4 chip, we heard again.
It has been a few years since the last incarnation of the Mac Pro, which used the M2 Ultra, so it would be a considerable leap in performance to go to an ultra theoretical M4 – but Macworld reports that this is what is in the cards.
This is based on the Apple internal code that Macworld saw one way or another, which contained the identifier “ t8152 ” – and we are told that this suggests the use of the M4 Ultra, called “Hidra” (a name that has been broadcast before on the rumor mill via Bloomberg).
There is not much more to this rumor, and Macworld has no details on the specification, although he theorizes that the M4 Ultra could work with a CPU with 32 cores and a GPU with 80 cores.
As always with this kind of leak, it could be authentic and yet never materialize. This could simply show us that Apple tested a Mac Pro configuration in this direction – but it is possible that this machine can never see the light of day, being preserved at some point in prototyping.
Analysis: M4 or wait M5?
This flight tells us a few things. First, Apple’s staff cannot spell “ Hydra ” (well, okay, let’s alternately say Apple engineers cannot think of decent code names). And, being serious, that it seems more and more likely that a new Mac Pro design will display later this year.
Indeed, the Mac Pro released later in 2025, with M4 Ultra, was suggested more than a year ago now, so this last speculation nugget supports the previous buzz on the vine.
In addition to the weight of rumors that start to add up, there is also the fact that for Apple, the Mac Pro is in a strange situation at the moment. This is due to the M4 Promotion of the considerable performance muscles and the depression of the M2 Ultra of the Mac Pro. The result is that you can buy a Mac Mini (with M4 Pro) and get better performance – at least in terms of raw processor power – than the Mac Pro, which is not a good look for the seriously expensive computer.
Not that the Mac Pro is in competition with the Apple compact Mac Mac, of course – it is a professional PC the heavy goods vehicles which offers many advantages in terms of high memory loads and PCIE extension options. It is indeed a very different beast, but when Apple must keep the Mac Pro on a reasonable basis in terms of relative performance – which still means that the refreshment of the rumor with an ultra M4 seems more likely.
A two-year gap also seems to be a fairly fair delay for a refreshment, and it seems unlikely to me that Apple would like to wait for the M5 series before postponing a new Mac Pro given the above reasons.
That said, there are those who argued that the M4 Ultra will not occur – due to problems linked to two M4 Max fleas together, which ultra chips do – and that Apple will indeed expect the M5 series to make another ultra model.
So everything is rather in the air for the moment – but if an ultra M4 will occur, it will surely be in a new Mac Pro, and we will probably see more leaks early enough. If the whispers calm down in the coming months, it will tell its own story.
