- Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro
- The company reportedly has no plans for a new version in the future.
- TechRadar readers say its $700 wheels are the worst Apple product ever
It’s official: Apple has killed the Mac Pro. The company’s flagship desktop Mac — a tuned model of which could cost more than $50,000 — is no longer available for sale on Apple’s website, with the Mac Pro page redirecting to the general Mac home page.
And according to 9to5Mac, it’s not just a website problem: the site claims that Apple has confirmed to it that the Mac Pro has been permanently discontinued. We say “permanently” because 9to5Mac also alleged that Apple has said it has no other plans for future Mac Pro hardware. This is about as definitive as it gets.
The Mac Pro was last updated in 2023, and with only three revisions in the last 14 years, it’s been clear for some time that the Mac Pro was low on Apple’s priority list. And although there were rumors of a new M4 Ultra model in 2025, this never came to fruition. The lack of updates suggested that sales numbers were meager, and clearly Apple felt it wasn’t worth developing it further with new chips and features given minimal public interest.

Even before its cancellation, the Mac Pro was in a tough situation. Although it starts at $6,999 / £7,199 (around AU$10,160), it’s been outperformed by the Mac Studio which, at $1,999 / £2,099 / AU$3,499, costs less than a third of the price of the Mac Pro. But with the M2 Ultra obsolete compared to the Mac Studio’s M3 Ultra, the Mac Pro’s appeal was largely limited to its superior expansion options – but that alone struggled to justify the price difference.
The Curse of $700 Wheels
Despite its high-level features and exorbitant price, the Mac Pro has sometimes been overshadowed by its own accessories. Specifically, the base model came with a set of four static legs, but these could be augmented with a pack of four wheels that would allow you to move it around. The problem ? These four wheels were priced at an outrageous $699 / £699 / AU$1,049.
This quickly set social media ablaze, with the idea that it was an emblem of Apple’s upward pricing trends quickly gaining traction. It’s an idea that Apple has struggled to shake – even as the company has released great value offerings like the Mac mini and MacBook Neo in the years since – and has tarnished the Mac Pro in the public eye.
In fact, we conducted a survey on the official TechRadar WhatsApp channel asking users to name the worst Apple product ever designed. The winner (if you can call it that) was none other than the $699 Mac Pro Wheel Set, which took home 56% of the vote (we’ll reveal the full results this weekend).
Our readers are not alone. On Reddit, users sarcastically lamented the demise of this expensive set of wheels. “End of an era,” said one commenter, while another quipped, “I bought some yesterday, ready to sell them for $2,500 a wheel. Please message me if you’re interested.”
Obviously, the wheels were seen as a huge misstep on Apple’s part. And as the Mac Pro reaches the end of its life, perhaps the almighty computer will be judged the same way. Although it enjoyed a devoted following, it always struggled to justify its own existence. Today it is history, apparently for good.
