- An iPhone Flip would be in the testing phase at Apple
- It joins the iPhone Fold, scheduled to launch later in 2026
- Apple apparently hasn’t decided on mass production yet
There’s another twist in the foldable iPhone story, as Apple is rumored to be testing the idea of a flip-style foldable handset, as well as the book-style foldable expected to launch later this year – and it could have a serious impact on our list of the best foldable phones.
This comes from popular tipster Fixed Focus Digital (via 9to5Mac), who says a foldable has definitely been looked at by Apple engineers. However, it remains to be seen whether it will actually be mass-produced, according to the leaker.
It would certainly make sense for Apple to at least consider the idea of releasing an iPhone that folds up and down as well as side to side. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 have shown how compact and portable these foldables can be when closed.
And this isn’t the first time an iPhone Flip has been rumored – hints of such a phone date back to at least 2021, although the iPhone Fold seems almost certain to launch in 2026, it seems Apple is more serious than ever about these form factors.
Flip or fold
Flip-style foldables and book-style foldables start as a roughly normal-sized phone – although with the flip approach you then flip the screen down, and with the book approach you open the screen instead.
Which is best really depends on your personal preferences and how you use your phone. Something like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 gives you a bigger screen if you need it, while flip phones – like the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 – can still be useful for taking photos and checking information when closed.
Of course, we now also offer triple phones, from Huawei and Samsung, giving you access to an even bigger screen. However, for its first foldable, Apple appears to be sticking with the classic single-hinge approach.
Earlier this month, the iPhone Fold’s specs and design were revealed online, and according to those in the know, it’s expected to appear in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro – and an iPhone Flip may not be that far behind.
