- Apple Music could soon offer sharing of lyrics directly to your WhatsApp status
- This would match a Spotify feature launched earlier this year
- The new feature could launch with iOS 26.2
Apple is reportedly working on a new feature for Apple Music that would allow users to share songs and lyrics on their WhatsApp status, matching a feature Spotify released earlier this year.
This new integration would allow users to directly share songs or a few lines of lyrics from Apple Music to WhatsApp, using custom cards and links to Apple Music.
Currently, users can share Apple Music links to their WhatsApp status, but there is no option to share lyrics and customization options are rare. This update aims to address that while ensuring parity with Spotify.
For reference, WhatsApp Status is a social network-style content carousel in the style of Instagram Stories, which sits alongside the text channel that long-time users may be familiar with.
The new feature is currently available through Apple’s developer beta, and depending on the company’s update schedule, it could eventually launch with iOS 26.2. After all, Apple Music was the target of new features in the recent iOS 26.1 update.
And as 9to5Mac reports, there’s still at least one issue left to resolve. The share icon may simply refuse to display when you try to share a song, rather than its lyrics, but this will likely be fixed by release.
All told, it’s another step in WhatsApp’s journey from messaging app to social platform – but more importantly, it’s a sign that Apple is still eagerly following Spotify’s lead as the all-important Spotify Wrapped season approaches.
Spotify is well ahead of Apple Music in terms of the size of its user base, with 713 million users compared to Apple’s 95 million.
Apple Music has made several solid moves to get ahead of its Swedish rival, like offering spatial and lossless audio as early as 2021 (Spotify got lossless fidelity this year and still lacks spatial audio), but has struggled to match Spotify’s cultural cache, especially when it comes to that key “OK, share it now!” social aspect of music.
Indeed, despite Apple Music’s Replay running through Spotify Wrapped last year, music fans and online commenters are still eagerly awaiting Spotify’s data-driven listening recap as the year draws to a close. By the way, Spotify just launched daily recaps and a weekly Wrapped offering. So it will be interesting to see who wins this battle this year.
While the addition of direct sharing to WhatsApp statuses may seem like a small upgrade to some, feature parity puts Apple Music in a better position as the spotlight turns to Spotify’s end-of-year antics.
