- Apple Notes could receive a Google Gemini-based update in iOS 26.4
- This will potentially allow you to create notes based on content from other apps
- This could fulfill a promise made by Apple in the summer of 2024
Although it’s outperformed by most of the best note-taking apps, Apple’s Notes app is never far from me when I’m on my iPhone. There’s something about its low-friction simplicity that makes it my go-to place for organizing my thoughts, managing my grocery list, planning ahead, and so much more. And now it looks like it could become even more essential thanks to a key upgrade rumored to be coming in iOS 26.4, and it’s all thanks to Apple’s recent partnership with Google Gemini.
According to The Information, the Notes app will get a significant tune-up in iOS 26.4 with the addition of some artificial intelligence (AI) that will connect the virtual assistant Siri to Google’s Gemini AI.
More specifically, The Information indicates that “Siri will also be able to handle other types of tasks, such as creating a Notes document with a cooking recipe or information on the main causes of drug addiction, for example.”
Honestly, that line about linking to your favorite recipes intrigued me. When we first got a glimpse of Apple Intelligence in June 2024, Apple promised that we would be able to let Siri grab items from one app and use them in another.
Reading The Information’s report, I just imagine that people might search for a recipe in Safari and then say something like, “Siri, add these ingredients to my shopping list.” » Think about how much time it could save you by repeatedly copying and pasting text from one place to another.
Finally keep your promise
And of course, this wouldn’t just be about completing your recipe book. You could potentially ask Siri to send a picture from the Photos app to a specific person in Messages. Or take an address in an email and get directions in Apple Maps.
Working on apps like this was one of the key promises Apple made in 2024, and now it looks like the company might finally be able to deliver on that commitment – even if it means backing down on its ambitions and enlisting Google’s help.
Apple has added many handy features to Notes in recent years. I like that the app can scan documents, correct their colors, and crop them appropriately with minimal effort on my part. And being able to have my audio notes automatically transcribed in the app is a great tool.
But with Gemini-based AI at the controls, the app could finally get closer to what Apple promised us almost two years ago. It’s clear why Apple chose Gemini, and I hope the wait will be worth it.
