- Apple can stick to the camera control button
- Previous rumors suggested that it would not be on the iPhone 18
- We can see a simpler button on future iPhones
Last week, we heard a rumor that the iPhone 17 would be the last to wear camera control, which was only introduced last year with the iPhone 16 – but a new leak suggests that the button will live, although in a different form.
The new rumor comes from well -known Digital Instant Tipster (via macrumors), which indicates that the camera control components are in production for the iPhone 18.
However, there is a twist: Apple apparently removes the capacitive sensor next year to reduce costs. It is the sensor that detects any type of contact or scanning, allowing users to gradually modify parameters such as exposure or zoom.
This will only leave the pressure sensor, detecting distinct keys of different forces. We will have to wait and see how it could affect the different functions of the camera control – some may be remapped or replaced, with the help of iOS.
Mixed reactions
When the camera control was introduced with the iPhone 16 models, Apple described it as a functionality which “raises the camera experience” and which is “filled with innovation” – offering easier access to various camera commands and visual intelligence.
In our journal iPhone 16, we described it as “major improvement” for Apple handsets, and in fact the “best add” to the 2024 handsets. However, this did not appear on the iPhone 16th that Apple launched the following February.
Despite our enthusiasm for the small button, it is just to say that the reaction overall has been mixed. Some have struggled to find a real objective for the control of the camera, but it seems that an investment of time and effort is necessary to make the most of it.
What seems clear is that we will recover the standard camera control button again with the four handsets of the iPhone 17 in September – including, if we believe the leaks, the iPhone 17 air which replaces the iPhone 16 Plus this year.
