It’s very strange: some people who have installed Windows 11 24h2 (which is now more widely deployed) have not been able to receive security updates for the office operating system due to the package of ‘Special installation they used.
Confused? I would not blame you, because when it caught my attention for the first time, it made me ask me what could have happened here.
And indeed, I cannot give you an answer to this, but the problem here is actually quite simple to explain, and in a way easy to repair (if a little hassle in terms of time, and I will come back to that later).
Windows 11 24h2 Windows installation problem – what happened
So what happened here is that Microsoft has somehow made a waste of multimedia Windows 11 24H2 multimedia installation packages that were created on the basis of safety updates of October 2024 or November 2024.
These would have been used by many people installing Windows 11 24h2 from zero during these months, because they were (at the time) the most recent copies of the operating system.
As for the exact problem here, Microsoft explains: “When using supports to install Windows 11, 24H2 version, the device can remain in a condition where it cannot accept other Windows security updates.”
The other key bit here is this mention of “during the use of the media”, which means that this bug affects those who used a reader – like a USB stick or other supports such as a DVD – and the Media creation tool to install Windows 11.
Other users are not affected here, so if you have not used the media creation tool, this is not a problem you need to worry about. This means that if you install Windows 11 24H2 via the Windows update inside the operating system, you are clear.
What if the security updates are broken on your PC
What is rather strange here is that this problem was recognized by Microsoft on December 24, 2024, but has just been approached and marked as “ resolved ” in the dashboard of the Windows 11 version there is a few days.
And Microsoft’s advice for this resolution frankly indicate the very obvious. You do not want this problem caused by Windows 11 update versions, version 24h2, October 2024 or November 2024? Then do not use the security versions October 2024 or November 2024 for the installation of Windows 11.

Anyway, in the future, if you install Windows 11 24h2 via Media, just make sure you use the latest version (and certainly not that you could have a kick since the end of the last year).
If you have already installed Windows 11 24h2 in this way and you have encountered the problem by which you can no longer install security updates – which is obviously a bad thing, leaving you open to potentially exploits – then you will have to act.
In this case, you will need to reinstall Windows 11 24h2 and make sure to use the December 2024 (or later) version. This implies running the same installation process that you carried out when entering 24h2 at the end of last year – simply make sure to choose to keep your data and personal applications when performing the process installation, and all that you have to lose is a certain time while waiting for resettlement to end.

It should be noted that Microsoft observes that this bug where updates can no longer be installed on the Windows 11 PC “could” occur, which will not necessarily be the case. That said, this problem could still appear later, all over the line – who knows – so be ready to make a resettlement at this stage if this is the case.
