At least 70 dead in 48 hours while the Lub pen monsoon

At least 70 people have died in the last 48 hours while the incessant monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc in the Punjab province of Pakistan, passing the overall number of deaths to 123 since the end of June, Express News reported.

The provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) has confirmed generalized damage due to the collapses of the roof, landslides and sudden floods triggered by strong precipitation.

At least 462 people have been injured since the fate of monsoon on June 25, while several low zones remain flooded.

The greatest number of deaths was recorded on Friday, with 10 deaths reported by Lahore, Chiniot, Okara, Chakwal and Sargodha.

Chiniot and Lahore have each recorded three deaths, while White saw two and Chakwal and Sargodha reported a death each.

Chakwal remains the most affected district, where intense precipitation has caused serious landslides and flooded in local rivers, moved the residents and damage the houses.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said more than 1,000 people had been saved from the Polyhohar alone region, including 450 from Rawalpindi, 398 from Jhelum, and 209 from Chakwal.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned that a new period of torrential precipitation should start from July 20.

Thunderstorms, sudden floods and landslides are planned in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balutchistan, Kashmir Azad and Gilgit-Baltistan.

High flood levels are expected in the Indus River in Kalabagh and Chashma, which prompted the authorities to issue high alerts and to urge local administrations to implement emergency plans.

District governments have been invited to remain pending, emit early warnings and prepare shelters for residents of vulnerable regions.
