Avengers: Apocalypse continues to be shrouded in mystery ahead of its launch late next year. Indeed, doomsdayDespite the December 18, 2026 release date and 27-strong cast list, very little has been officially revealed about the highly anticipated superhero film.
Thanks to a recent Disney presentation that took place in Italy, we may have learned which groups our heroes will split into to face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. And, if this information can be taken at face value, it raises some interesting questions about the Marvel movie’s plot.
Potential spoilers immediately follow For Avengers: Apocalypseso proceed at your own risk.
As seen in the video above, it looks like there will be five teams of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes to follow.
There are no surprises regarding four of these formations. Fantastic Four and The New Avengers – the latter formerly known as Thunderbolts – remain unchanged from their recent cinematic outings. As expected, the old X-Men team only contains mutants, and then Shuri, M’Baku, and Namor are grouped together after the trio shared the screen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
It’s in the fifth group that things get interesting, because it seems that the rest of doomsdayThe cast will form another Avengers team led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America.
Captain America: Brave New WorldThe ending revealed that Wilson was ready to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and setting up the Thunderbolts as The New Avengers did not dampen Wilson’s ambition, with Love at first sight‘ post-credits scene confirming that Cap 2.0 continued with his plan.
From what was shown during the Disney Italy event, he called in favors from heroes he not only knows, but who are currently not part of a team. This includes longtime castmates in Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man.
Interestingly, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi is also part of this lineup, which begs the question of how he gets involved. Since Shang-Chi is based in the same city as Lang, aka San Francisco, will the latter reach out to the former and convince him to join Wilson’s collective?
The biggest thing that has piqued fans’ interest about Cap’s rumored team-up, however, is the apparent inclusion of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. When we last saw The God of Mischief, he was holding the multiverse’s seemingly infinite number of timelines together to prevent its collapse. So how can he be part of a team if he’s otherwise committed?
In my opinion, there are two scenarios. The first is that Loki is on Cap’s team due to his family association with Thor, and the latter will be tasked with defending his brother if Doom comes calling to kill Loki and reset the multiverse in his image. Alternatively, Doom could first locate Loki, remove the latter from his role in saving the multiverse, and return him to Earth. From there, Loki could ally himself with Team Sam, who could certainly use Loki’s multiversal knowledge to track down Doom.
Of course, MCU fans – myself included – might just be reading too much into the latter. presentation. But with rumors circulating that doomsdayThe first trailer for could be released very soon, Disney could prepare us for the teams we will see as part of the inaugural teaser for the Marvel Phase 6 film.
While we wait for the first official images to be released from one of the most exciting new films of 2026, read everything we know so far at Avengers: Apocalypse.
