ISLAMABAD:
Chinese Ambassador to Islamabad Jiang Zaidong hailed Pakistan as China’s “ironclad brother” and hailed its “consistent and firm support” for the one-China principle, while announcing Beijing’s decision to officially establish October 25 as Taiwan Restoration Commemoration Day.
In a statement issued in Islamabad, Ambassador Jiang said the decision – adopted by the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress on October 24, 2025 – marked the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s return to China after Japan’s defeat in World War II.
He said Pakistan “has always upheld the authority of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758” and “firmly supported China’s position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China.”
Jiang noted that the decision to establish the commemoration day was made personally by President Xi Jinping and promulgated through strict legislative procedures, reflecting “the aspirations of the Chinese people and the nation’s determination to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
He added that it also “demonstrates the Chinese Communist Party’s unwavering determination to fulfill its historic mission and achieve complete national reunification.”
The ambassador said the restoration of Taiwan in 1945 was “an important result of the Chinese people’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression and irrefutable proof of the restoration of China’s sovereignty over Taiwan.”
He pointed out that many streets, buildings and institutions in Taiwan bear the name “Restoration”, symbolizing a shared national memory among people across the Taiwan Strait.
Recalling the historical context, Jiang said that under the Cairo Declaration (1943) and the Potsdam Proclamation (1945), the Allied Powers agreed that all territories that Japan had taken from China, including Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, “should be returned to China.”
After Japan’s surrender, he noted, China officially resumed sovereignty over Taiwan on October 25, 1945.
