Bill authorizes NADRA to block CNICs of suspects

The national identity card is a sensitive and vital document linked directly to national security

ISLAMABAD:

In a move with implications for national security and identity management, the Senate Standing Committee on Interior has approved a key amendment bill authorizing the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to block national identity cards of suspected individuals for a period of up to 60 days.

The bill, presented by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, was approved by the committee and will now be tabled in the next session of the Senate for final approval.

The proposed amendment aims to close critical operational gaps in the fight against the misuse of identity documents and against individuals who escape legal scrutiny.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the national identity card is a sensitive and vital document linked directly to national security.

Officials have argued that its misuse poses serious risks not only to security but also to the country’s economy. They argued that in the absence of a clear legal framework, NADRA faces serious operational hurdles in taking prompt action against suspected cases.

The ministry further said that criminal elements often exploit legal loopholes to avoid action, deliberately avoiding procedures instead of presenting their position before authorities.

Under the proposed amendment, NADRA would be authorized to temporarily block the identity cards of such individuals for a period of up to 60 days, thereby allowing authorities to carry out necessary verifications and legal procedures.
