Binance, Kraken has thwarted social engineering attacks similar to Coinbase Hack

Binance and Kraken, two of the world’s greatest exchanges in the world, were recently targeted in a wave of social engineering attacks similar to that which led to a major data violation in Coinbase.

Pirates approached customer support agents with corruption offers and detailed instructions to contact attackers via Telegram, Bloomberg reports citing people familiar with the issue. The two exchanges managed to block attempts without losing customer data.

The exchanges were faced with tactics reflecting those used against Coinbase (corner), which earlier this week revealed that it was planning to pay $ 180 to 400 million in repair costs and customer reimbursements after the attackers had access to their personal information.

This violation led to a ransom request of $ 20 million after the attackers managed to bribe employees / entrepreneurs abroad in Coinbase to obtain information on customers. The exchange dismissed the staff involved and contacted the police.

In Binance, internal systems, including artificial intelligence robots, helped detect messages related to corruption, stop conversations before they deteriorate. Policies that limit access to customer data, unless users start contact have also contributed to mitigating risks.

Coinbase would have started to see an unusual activity in January, and last December, rival scholarships had started to warn the company of the unusual activity targeting its biggest customers.
